Attending this year’s conference on Integrating Jewish Learning, Values, and Social Responsibility were Jackie Avise, Jason Boral, Ross Feldman, and Emanuel Kaunitz. Mr. Lash acted as professional chauffeur and veteran team leader. The opportunity to meet with students from all over the country cannot be understated. This year’s participants came from New York, Brooklyn, Chicago, Baltimore, Philly, rural Pennsylvania, Tucson, Buffalo, Charlotte, and many other cities and towns. Many new friendships are forged in such events. Panim is an intense four-day session of well-coordinated events designed to immerse teens into participatory Jewish political thinking and social action. Some of the highlights of the conference were the Encounter with Homelessness, Street Torah, a meeting with Congresswoman Sue Myrick. Policy Sessions on Israel and on War and Peace, and tours of the Holocaust and the American History Museums. Some of us attended daily Shacharit services. It is an amazing conference and I invite next year’s class of Post Confirmation students to attend. It serves as a venue to understanding the values of a wonderful tradition and it has the potential to change your perspectives on your own ability to contribute to Jewish life. See you there. For the first five weeks of the ses sion, we discussed Jewish rituals and beliefs surrounding death and dying. We compared the burial and mourning rituals of Ashkenazim, Sephardim, and Mizrahim to closely match those rituals with our own class make up. We discussed Jewish beliefs of the afterlife and we compared rit uals and beliefs from different religious traditions. Teachers and students took the opportunity to share their personal experiences with the loss of a loved one. We were fortunate to have Janice Bernstein, in her role as a member of Chevra Kadesha, present a demonstration of ritual and ritual objects used to bury the dead. On the remaining weeks, we discussed a variety of subjects. The question of Jewish identity was raised in one session. Exploring such a topic naturally raises religious and political ques tions about who is a Jew. Discussions raged from required religious practice to legal consid erations in Israel.
