The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2005 - Page 28 New JLI Course Is Endorsed by over 100 Holocaust Centers through out the World Course to Tackle Difficult Issues of Faith and Suffering The new Jewish Learning Institute course which begins in Charlotte on November 8 has gar nered the support of major Holocaust centers and the leading figures of the Holocaust move ment. Most notable is the endorse ment of Simon Wiesenthal, of blessed memory, who endorsed this course just weeks before he passed away. The course, which will be taught in Charlotte and around the world, was written by North Carolina Chabad Rabbi Aaron Herman of the Chabad Center in Cary. “I strongly support this JLI course, as information in our defense against the repetition of history,” wrote Mr. Wiesenthal. He was perhaps the most famous Nazi-hunter in the world. Beyond Never again - The Holocaust: A View from the Soul is not a course about the Holocaust; rather, it is a study into the Jewish ' response of the soul to tragedy and suffering. He is teaching you that the deeper meaning of the word is the sum total of all the concepts of the let ters joined together in that order. Therefore, an analy sis of each letter is really an analysis of deep philosophical concepts in Judaism. Rabbi Yaakov Marcus was bom in Baltimore, MD. He has been involved in Jewish education professionally for over 15 years. Between 1989 and 1995, he and his wife organ ized and ran an outreach shul in a secular Jewish suburb of Toronto. In 1995, he and his family moved to Israel where he became a mem ber of the rabbinical faculty of the Neve Yerushalayim College for women in Jerasalem. He lectures there as well as ranning two of their levels. He is a guest lecturer for the Heritage House and often speaks on their behalf at the Rabbi Yaacov Marcus Hebrew University, as well as being their lecturer in residence for their Rosh HaShanah/Yom Kippur outreach pro grams in the Old City. He is also a reg ular lecturer for the Darchey Bina and Afikey Torah Seminaries in Bayit Vegan. He speaks internationally in the United States, England and South Africa. Through it, he met filmmaker/director Sandi Simcha DuBowski in the beginning of his efforts to create a documentary film about Orthodox gay Jews, and so began their collaboration on “Trembling Before God.” Rabbi Greenberg led the first UJA G.L.B.T. mission to Israel this past summer. On Tuesday evening. Temple Beth El’s Cha-vurat Keshet will sponsor a showing of “Trembling Before God” in the Temple Beth El Silverman Social Hall at 7 PM. A $10 donation is requsted. Rabbi Greenberg will be giving a fascinating talk on Friday, 'December 2, 2005, at Temple Beth El’s 8 PM Shabbat Service on Biblical and Talmudic infor mation relating to gay and lesbian issues, women’s issues and Judaism as a whole. The message is universal and has connections to many current issues. The talk will address many interesting points of view in his book that have people everywhere talking.
