The Charlotte Jewish News -February 2006 - Page 12 Historic Concert by Carolina Voices Will Give Voice to the Dead Sea Scrolls Temple Beth El to Host Second Performance Carolina Voices, in collabora tion with Discovery Place, will present an unprecedented concert of choral music featuring the world premieres of two exciting new compositions inspired by The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition in Charlotte. The concert is entitled “Songs and Songs of the Ages: Celebrating Heritage Through Song.” Two performances are scheduled: Friday, March 3, 2006, at 8 PM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 115 W. 7th St., and Sunday, March 5, 2006, at 5 PM at Temple Beth El, Shalom Park, 5101 Providence Rd. Under the direction of Donna Hill, Carolina Voices’ chamber ensemble Festival Singers will be accompanied by a chamber orchestra of local professional musicians. The two commissioned pieces, one by Charlotte composer David Crowe, and the other by former Carolina Voices Artistic Director William Daiky are made possible in large part by the 2005 McColl Award from the Arts & Science Council. Carolina Voices recently won this prestigious award to com mission and perform two new works of choral music inspired by the Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibition, which runs February 17 through May 29, 2006, at Discovery Place. Crowe’s work takes as its text Psalm 138, one of King David’s hymns of praise- one of the Scrolls actually on exhibit at Discovery Place. Other selections will cele brate the common heritage repre sented by the priceless artifacts in the Discovery Place exhibition. According to Dr. William McConnell, Carolina Voices Artistic Director, both organiza tions envision the project as a cat alyst for communication and col laboration among diverse con stituencies in the community. “The wedding of new music with ancient texts will energize all who experience and participate in this collaboration.” The Dead Sea Scrolls are recog nized internationally as the great est archeological discovery of the twentieth century. They represent the earliest known manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, as well as sec tarian writings offering invaluable insights into the social history of ancient Judea, the birthplace of both Judaism and Christianity. The exhibition will contain scrolls never before ^en in the United States,, along with other artifacts discovered in 1947 near the OUR STAND $338 SAVED ON CAR INSURANCE IS $338 AVAILABLE FOR SOMETHING ELSE. A commission and collaboration such as this is a unique concept. According to the Israel Antiquities Authority, the agency responsible for the preservation of the Scrolls and other elements of Israel’s archeological heritage, musical works have never been commis sioned in conjunction with an exhibit of the Scrolls anywhere else in the world. Through these concerts, Carolina Voices and Discovery Place will give voice to the exhibi tion of these ancient artifacts. Both the Israel Antiquities Authority and The Dead Sea Scrolls Foundation support the concert. Through this innovative collab oration, Carolina Voices and Discovery Place have sought to: * Serve as a working example for the cultural community of an authentic partnership benefiting both organizations, * Present a unique and innova tive original work to the Charlotte- Mecklenburg community, * Support an original concept unprecedented in previous exhibi tions of The Dead Sea Scrolls, * Diversify and expand audi ences for both organizations and Charlotte’s greater cultural sector, * Increase the educational impact of The Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition, and * Increase awareness and appre ciation of choral music by present ing the historical context and con temporary relevance of the com missioned pieces.
