The Charlotte Jewish News -February 2006 - Page 13 Youth Visions Hebrew High Students Help the Needy and Have Fun, Too Hebrew High is not only about learning Torah, history and Jewish culture. The CHS student council members lead their peers in many tzedakah projects throughout the year. These projects teach our young adults the importance of caring for their neighbors in the Jewish community and beyond. Creating caring Jewish leaders for the future is one of our main goals at Hebrew High. Our December pizza dinner was a huge success. The students donated $100 dollars to Jewish Family Services, along with over 30 gift cards that JFS dis tributed to needy families during the holiday sea son. Having fun and helping others is a spe cial focus at Hebrew High. This year’s 8th and 9th grade retreats will focus on tikkun olam (repairing the world), as we train our students to become Mitzvah Clowns. The David Goldsmith. Jonathan Cohen, and Alex Comen. Federation Missions to Israel (Continued from page 5) Hadera, a city which has grown over 30% by the influx of Ethiopians and Russian immigrants, has a never ending laundry list of needs created not just by immigration but also by the terrorist attacks in Hadera during the past five years. In November, seven women traveled to Hadera as a reciprocal visit for the Hadera Women’s Forum trip to Charlotte in August 2004. We arrived just ten days after the October 26 devastating bombing in the center of the city of Hadera. Roz Cooper, Susan Jacobs, Hannah Kaunitz, Sue Klein, Nicki Ostrow, Linda Seigel and I spent a week in Hadera hosted by Israeli families in their homes. The Hadera Women’s Forum is spon sored by the Partnership 2000 Southeast Consortium, but the Women’s Forum is a Charlotte project that will move with us as we enter the Charlotte/Hadera Partnership. Monthly phone calls take place between-the two groups of women to mentor, partner and oversee the activities of the busi ness and professional networking groups funded by the consortium. In Hadera the mission participants were overwhelmed by the out pouring of love and friendship which awaited us. Each day and evening were spent visiting women’s businesses - including a gym, a plumbing and restaurant supply business, a caterer, dance studio, women’s specialty shops and artists’ studios. We also attended program meetings such as one with over 100 women at the business and professional entire class will learn to dress, sing and act like clowns. The group will visit hospitals and assisted living facilities in our area. Hebrew High is a great place for Jewish teens to learn about their heritage and to put Jewish values into practice. It’s not too late to join the fun and learning. Questions? Call Roz at 704-944- 6782. ^ The entire women s forum. group and a pot luck dinner and speaker with the mother-to-moth- er volunteers. During a special one day visit to Harish, the mis sion participants presented fifteen blankets made by Charlotte’s BBG girls to children who live in a Warm House, a day care facility established to serve the fifteen neediest children in the area. Partnership 2000 is a “people to people” endeavor to develop ties between Jews in the Diaspora and Jews in Israel. During the two missions to Israel, the ties between Hadera and Charlotte were very obvious in the genuine friendship and caring that have developed between the people in each of our communities. During both missions teachers, teens, police officers and dignitaries who have visited Charlotte came out to welcome us, and at each meeting renewed friendships were rekindled and new friendships bom. A Community Mission to Israel which will include a special visit to Hadera is being planned for the fall of 2006.
