Mark your calendars for March
18 and 19, as Hadassah hosts
Charlotte’s Second Annual Jewish
Film Festival in partnership with
the Light Factory and the Levine
Jewish Community Center along
with a corporate sponsorship from
Diamonds Direct.
Based on the overwhelming
success of last year’s event, the
2006 festival has been expanded
to two days and four films:
The first jewel on the schedule
is Rashevski's Tango, a French
comedy/drama set in Belgium,
director Sam Garbarski’s feature
film directorial debut. This is a
tale of one extended family’s
struggle to find meaning and iden
tity within their own somewhat
dormant Jewish heritage. When
81-year-old family matriarch Rosa
Rashevski passes away, her
descendants are left unprepared,
as they have no idea what tradi
tional Jewish rites they should be
practicing. As a result, various
Rashevskis begin some rather
intense periods of spiritual intro
spection, ranging from Rosa’s
granddaughter Nina’s (Tania
Gabarski, daughter of the director)
proclamation to start and raise a
Jewish family to grandson and
former Israeli military man, Rica’s
(Rudi Rosenberg) turbulent rela
tionship with his Muslim girl
friend, Khadija (Selma Kouchy).
To further complicate matters, a
non-Jewish family friend named
Antoine (Hippolyte Girardot)
shows up at the funeral and strikes
up a conversation with Nina,
whom he used to baby-sit when
they were both younger. As he
grows more fond of the young
woman and becomes intent on
making her his wife, he learns of
her intentions to have a Jewish
family and tries to find a solution
that would make the young
woman reconsider him as a suitor.
Coffee and dessert will be avail
able to ticket holders after the fea
ture. (Please note: This movie has
adult content and no one under the
age of 16 will be admitted.)
Rashevski's Tango will be show
ing at 8 PM Saturday evening,
March 18, at the Duke Theatre,
Spirit Square along with the short
feature. The Nose Job Jew.
The festival will be rounded out
the festival at 2 PM Sunday after
noon, March 19 at the Sam Lemer
Cultural Arts Center, in the Jewish
Community Center with a these
shinging gems: a documentary
and three short subjects. In
February 2002, a Jewish court
(beit din) made up of three rabbis
from the United States and one
from Israel flew to a remote area
five hours from Kampala in
Uganda to conduct a formal con
version. There, over a period of
six days, they converted over 300
Abayudaya (the Ugandan term for
Jews) welcoming them into
the community of world
Jewry. The documentary
Moving Heaven and Earth
records this momentous
event as well as examines
the difficult question: “Who
is a Jew?” For although the
Abayudaya have completed
the halachic requirements,
including a symbolic cir
cumcision and a mikveh or ritual
immersion, many in the world
Jewish community still will not
accept them as Jews. Interviews
include Rabbi Joseph Potasnik of
the New York Board of Rabbis
and host of WABC' radio’s
“Religion on the Line”;
Chancellor Ismar Schorsch of the
Jewish Theological Seminary;
Rabbi David Ellenson, President
of Hebrew Union college-Jewish
Institute of Religion, among oth
ers. Moving Heaven and Earth
will be shown along with My Dad
is the Strongest, Black Hats and
Short Skirts, and Kosher.
Tickets for each showing as
well as a weekend package will be
available both in advance and at
the door. Tickets for Saturday
night only are $10 in advance and
$12 at the door, for Sunday after
noon only tickets are $6 in
