The Foundation For The Charlotte Jewish Community
What It Is and What It Does

In January’s Charlotte Jewish
News, I was introduced to the
community as the Foundation for
the Charlotte Jewish
Community’s newly hired
Director for Planned Giving. For
the past 20 years I’ve admired
Charlotte from afar. Although I’m
still getting settled I’ve learned
much about this new place I call
home. Since my arrival in late
October I’ve met many people
over coffee, at board meetings,
attending lectures, at lunches, or
wonderful evenings such as the
Federation’s Main Event. I’ve
learned a lot and have so much
more to learn.
One of the things I have learned
is that there is much confusion
concerning my role in the commu
nity and the role of the organiza
tion 1 represent. “I saw your pic
ture in the Charlotte Jewish
News,'' has been a frequent
response when meeting someone
at a Newcomer Schmooze or at
Friday or Saturday services. This
is often followed by an immedi
ately predictable, “What do you
do?”
Simply put, my role is to help
the entire Charlotte Jewish com
munity raise funds to support its
many worthy causes not only
today but for generations to come.
Of course, it is a bit more compli
cated than that and in future arti- ,
cles we will explore the specifics.
So, over time, my first objec

tive is to help answer this question
and familiarize you with the role
of the Foundation for the
Charlotte Jewish Community, my
role as its Director for Planned
Giving, and our role with the
Charlotte Jewish agencies. This
will not take place by reading this
column, the next one, or even the
one that follows. There will, how
ever, come a time when it will all
make sense. And, when it does,
you will be able to differentiate
between the Foundation For The
Charlotte Jewish Community
(FCJC) and Foundation of Shalom
Park but more importantly under
stand the significant role that each
plays in the present and future of
the Charlotte’s Jewish community.
We share this role with
Charlotte Jewish Day School,
Congregation Ohr Ha Torah, the
Hebrew Cemetery, Jewish Family
Services, the Jewish Federation of
Greater Charlotte, Sandra and
Leon Levine Jewish Community
Center, Temple Beth El and
Temple Israel. We’re all partners
working together to enhance the
quality of Jewish life today and
for future generations. You will
also learn, as I have, that the
acronym FCJC rolls off your
tongue rather easier.
The Foundation for the
Charlotte Jewish Community
(FCJC) is a nonprofit charitable
organization dedicated to further
ing the quality of Jewish religion,
life and culture in the greater
Charlotte area. Its mission is to
advance philanthropy through
education and to raise permanent
charitable resources to improve
and strengthen the quality of
Jewish life.
I look forward to working with
our current donors, affiliate organ
izations, and future donors as we
continue to learn from each other
and fulfill our roles improving our
Jewish community for future gen
erations.
