excited than to get Cantor Bernard
to express such an emotion.
(Elias and Andy, don’t be
offended, we love you both the
way you are.) When I emailed
both cantors that the Levine-Sklut
Judaic Library and Resource
Center now owns the entire collec
tions of music recorded on CDs in
the Milken Archive of American
Jewish Music, Cantor Roochvarg
replied with a question, “When
can I borrow some of them?”
Cantor Bernard emailed, “That’s
awesome. The people I work with
at the Union of Reform Judaism
are doing their best to support the
work of the people at the Milken
Archives of Jewish Music. In fact,
most of the recordings I used for
my article about the Kaddish in
the Reform Judaism Magazine
(Spring 2007) came from them.
I’m glad to know that you have
them.”
The Milken Archive of
American Jewish Music is a
groundbreaking, on-going explo
ration of the vast panorama of
music—secular and sacred—asso
ciated with the vibrant, 350-year
American Jewish experience. This
rich body of music mirrors the
the
scope and variety of Jewish
life in America, while
expressing the universality
and relevance of Jewish
experience over the cen
turies to people of all faiths
and backgrounds.
The diverse music
reflects Jewish and
American social, political,
artistic, and religious histor
ical developments, as well
as the fascinating intersec
tions among Jewish orienta
tions, American cultural
strains, and Western musical
forms and styles. It is this
abundant repertoire that
Milken Archive has documented
and recorded on its pioneering
series of 50 CDs on the Naxos
label, making it available to cur
rent and future generations.
The Milken Archive of
American Jewish music was creat
ed in 1990 by Lowell Milken,
chairman of the Milken Family
Foundation in Santa Monica, CA,
which is the parent body of the
project. Neil W. Levin, professor
of Jewish music at the Jewish
Theological Seminary of America
and a recognized scholar and
authority on Jewish music history
and literature, has served as the
Milken Archive’s artistic director
The Millken CD Collection
since 1993.
To date, the Milken Archive as
recorded nearly 700 pieces—most
of them world-premiere record
ings—representing the work of
more than 200 native and immi
grant American composers.
Recordings feature celebrated
soloists, conductors, orchestras,
and other ensembles from major
cities throughout Europe and
Great Britain as well as the United
States. The series is now available
to music lovers in 57 countries.

Anti-Poverty Initiative
(Continued from page 15)
combat anti-Semitism.
“It is intrinsically very high in
our Jewish value system, but I
think because it is an ongoing
issue, we sometimes lose the
focus,” said Batya Abramson-
Goldstein, the director of the St.
Louis JCRC.
While many JCRCs also strug
gle with keeping poverty on their
agendas because they are under
staffed and underfunded, the one
in St. Louis has been among the
more proactive. It has worked
closely with eight other non
governmental organizations and
religious groups in an effort to get
the Department of Housing and
Urban Development in Missouri
to adopt an initiative to combat
lead paint poisoning.
In 2008, as part of the JCPA-led
anti-poverty initiative, the St.
Louis JCRC will focus on food
security and health issues.
“There shall always be needy
among us,” Gutow said, para
phrasing Deuteronomy 16. “Our
tradition demands that we get up
and do something.”
For his $21, Gutow said he
would be subsiding in part on an
inexpensive Morrocan dish called
majadera rice made of rice, lentils
and fried onions.
“You can forget about Whole
Foods,” he said.
