The summer is almost over and
those activities that filled our sum
mer months with such fun will
soon be just a memory.
That is the nature of life
in general. While it is
true that the good times
seem to fly by so quick
ly, associated thoughts
and images linger in
one’s mind. So, too,
with loved ones whom
we’ve been privileged
and honored to know
and love. Their passing brings an
abrupt halt to those summer
months of fun. Their passing
leaves in us in a dismal and cold
winter void that time and grief are
unable to fill. The fun we shared
during the summers of their lives
become memories ... always in
our minds, just a thought or image
away. So many of us have been
fortunate enough to be untouched

by death. However,the reality of
life is that one day it will come
knocking at our door ... most
times when we least expect it.
Judaism, with its infinite
and divine offerings,
gives us the tools we
need to cope with these
horrific losses.
During the upcoming
High Holiday season,
one of the greatest
mitzvot you can do is to
perpetuate the memory
of someone who preced
ed you in eternal life. During this
season make a commitment to
recall the memories of loved ones,
friends and neighbors you’ve lost;
to recall those who perished in
national and international
tragedies of terrorism and war; to
think of the Jewish martyrs who
gave their lives so that Judaism
would survive, providing us with
the religious freedoms that we
enjoy today.
How can the average Jew
achieve such a Godly task?
Judaism offers several ways to
honor and memorialize precious
departed souls: Participate in your
synagogue’s Yizkor services held
during the Yom Kippur and
Shemini Atzeret holidays to
memorialize those departed souls;
light the ritual yarzheit candle on
the eve of the Yizkor services to
symbolize the light of those
departed souls; make a donation
in memory of a departed soul
which both perpetuates the memo
ry and allows the recipient organ
ization to continue their altruistic
work; join the Hebrew Cemetery
Association of Charlotte which
provides for a sanctified burial
ground for every Jew in need of a
burial spot; attend the Hebrew
Cemetery’s Annual Memorial
Service on Sunday, October 5 at
10:30 AM to show your respect to
the dead.
Judaism is a beautifully rich
religion that provides for a deep
and meaningful way of life ... and
death. Be part of that life now ...
and always. Guarantee that all of
your summers are filled with sig
nificance, gratitude and joy..
