The Charlotte Jewish News - November 2008 - Page 25 Jewish Family Services Collaborates to Expand Services Collaborate. From the Latin word collaborar comes an impor tant concept for JFS and for tem ples: “to labor together.” JFS is a strong believer in “win-win” col laborative programming. In part nerships, temples get additional resources to serve their members and JFS has opportunities to meet the needs of a greater number of community members. It has always been the goal of JFS to go beyond the agency walls to reach out to Jews where they live and socialize. Just a few examples of current collaborative programs include Big Bubbie/Big Zayde, a joint effort of JFS and The Bernstein Leadership Group which bridges the generations by matching a sen ior volunteer with a young family. Each generation learns from the other and a sense of Jewish conti nuity is passed on. The Charlotte Jewish Day School has partnered with JFS to create a volunteer tutoring program that creates that much needed extra edge for chil dren who need a bit more one-on- one academic attention. JFS is able to feed more people because of the collaborative 'effort of our schools, temples, Temple Beth ETs summer food drive, and the generosity of our community working together because we all agree that human rights begin with breakfast. Temple Israel and JFS partner to present the monthly Job Seekers Support Group and JFS is now in the process of working with tem ple Israel as well as Temple Beth El to strengthen this vital program by adding a job bank and mentors. Oasis and JFS joined with the Ivy, Charlotte’s newest Adult Day Care facility to present a Reminiscence Workshop and tea for caregivers and elderly parents. JFS has also worked together with the Levine- Sklut Judaic Library and Resource Center to bring lectures by Jewish authors, Hadassah has partnered with JFS to strengthen our Meals on Wheels program and Federation is joining JFS in spon soring a Poverty Simulation pro gram. As we prepare for the Holidays and then move into the New Year, look for more opportunities to enjoy some enriching joint programming. While collaborative projects have always been important, they are even more so now for many reasons. The changing demographics of the elderly, inter married and young families are of concern to both Jewish Family Services and the temples. Our Jewish population in Charlotte used to be almost entirely in one zip' code; now we are literally spread all over the city and into outlying areas. Programs that are jointly sponsored are a more effi cient use of our resources. Temples often create caring com Donations to Jewish Family Services in September 2008 HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO Richard Chenkin from Michelle and Barry Goodman, Bob and Linda Isser Charles Miller from Anita and Marvin Shapiro Karen Knoble and thank you for the many years of JFS Service from Adam Bernstein and Tamar Seigel Don Bernstein from Dr. Marvin and Anita Shapiro Ellis Levinson from Alene and Sam Strauss Suly Chenkin from Bob and Linda Isser BEST WISHES FOR A FULL AND SPEEDY RECOVERY - TO Deane Boxer from Jill and Ed Newman, Alene and Sam Strauss Ita Klenicki from Audrey Madans Sarah Ackerman from Evelyn Berger David Framm from Jennifer and Michael Newman Anita Grey from Gloria Ershler, Dorothy Schulman, Jill and Ed Newman, Elise Menaker Leon Levine from Dr. Marvin and Anita Shapiro Stacey Marshall Feldstein from Anita and Marvin Shapiro MAZEL TOV ON The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Finkelstein from Jean and Walter Finkelstein, Audrey Madans The birth of the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lemer from Helga and Hugo Rosenberger The Bar Mitzvah of Brett Balick from Laura Sidden, Linda Keziah, Stephanie Hogue, Ellen Ragona, Alvenice Simmons The birth Ellis Mae, new baby of Mr. and Mrs. Carter Meiselman, from Sue and Kim Worrel, Patty and Bill Gorelick The wedding of Leah and Bemie Amler from the Starr fami ly, the Weiser family The Bar Mitzvah anniversary of Harvey Barer from Ruth and Alan Goldberg The Bar Mitzvah of Harriet and Mark Perlin’s grandson Andrew from Suly and Richard Chenkin The Bar Mitzvah of Scott Lemer from Beverly Tirsun The birth of Gary and Maxine Silverstein’s granddaughter Lucy from Anita and Mark Shapiro The birth of Glorie Levinson’s granddaughter, Nicole Dawn Levinson, from Anita and Marvin Shapiro The birth of Harry and Gloria Lemer’s new grandchild from Anne and Bob Yudell, Jill and Ed Newman, Ruth and Alan Goldberg, Barry and Michelle Goodman The birth of the granddaughter of Wilma and Gerson Asrael from Anita and Marvin Shapiro The marriage of Bob and Lee Jacobson from Linda and Ira Bass, Beverly Tirsun, Elliot and Peggy Gartner, .Ellen and Steven Muhlfedler The marriage of Carol and Bob Speizman’s son Mark and Cathy and the engagement of Bryan and Kim from Anita and Marvin Shapiro The birth of Yonaton to Liat and Itay Berger from the Weiser fami- >y The marriage of your children Lauren and David Weiner to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jacobs from Ruth and Alan Goldberg Your new home to Mr. and Mrs. Hilbert Fuerstmen from Audrey Madans The B’nai Mitzvah of the grandsons of Lynn and Paul Edelstein, Sammy and Scott Lemer, from Anita and Marvin Shapiro HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO Dr. and Mrs. Edwin Newman from Ruth and Alan Goldberg, Dr. Marvin and Anita Shapiro Marion and David Kronovet from Dr. Marvin and Anita Shapiro munities which emphasize volun teers, adult learning and support services for congregants. It can be helpful to integrate JFS into the caring community effort. Invite a JFS staff member to sit in on com mittee meetings to ascertain how JFS might best be of service, even helping the committee choose pro grams and plan events. Invite a JFS representative to be part of your temple’s leadership training program or to speak at a Shabbat service or to conduct a training class for bikkur cholim volunteers. One of the greatest benefits from collaboration is the building of relationships between rabbis, tem ple leaders and JFS staff and social workers, who each bring different training and knowledge to the experience. It is time for Jewish Family Services and for temples to reach out more to each other, so that they can become partners in this exciting adventure. $ Todah to Fresh Market on Providence and to Phil’s Deli for their generous contribution that ensured our clients celebrated Rosh Hashanah complete with challahs, apples and honey.
