The Charlotte Jewish News - March 2009 - Page 5 I i i i i i i i i i i i Amnesty International Sponsors Local Panel Discussion The Myers Park High School chapter of Amnesty International sponsored a panel discus sion on “Peace and Human Rights in the Gaza Strip.” Six panelists answered four questions from moderator Jeff Campbell of WCNC, followed by questions from the audience. The panelists were: Edith Garwood, Amnesty International USA Rabbi Faith Cantor, Temple Israel Rose Hamid, local Palestinian Sarah Kaplan, Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte David Dixon, Action Center for Justice and the Charlotte Free Palestine Movement Dr. Jim Piazza, Political Science Professor at UNCC focusing on Middle Eastern politics More than 120 people attended the discussion, including many Myers Park High School students, as well as Hebrew High students, teachers, and parents, as well as other members of the Jewish and Palestinian communities. The questions from both the moderator and the audience varied from specific to the recent Gaza conflict, to Israel’s need for defense, to the legitimacy of the Hamas government.
