Bea Gibbs: Improving the Lives of Area
Seniors Every Day
Bea Gibbs’ background with
seniors began nearly ten years ago
when she retired and moved to
Charlotte to be near family. She
did not stay retired very long,
quickly becoming involved in sen
ior activities. Through her advoca
cy work, she met a fellow senior
advocate who put her in touch
with the Gerontology program at
Central Piedmont Community
College. Bea’s CPCC internship
brought her to Jewish Family
Services, where she started a
Senior Outreach Program and
eventually joined the staff Today,
Bea’s Senior Outreach Program is
one of the most appreciated and
most requested of all JFS services.
In addition to the more than 150
seniors she serves with Jewish
programming and visits, Bea is
also available to provide con
cerned family members with sup
port and information to guide
them through the decision making
process of finding the best solu
tions and living arrangements for
their aging loved ones. When it is
time to move an aging parent from
his or her home and explore alter
native living situations, it can be
extremely stressful for everyone
in the family. Bea not only works
one-on-one with families but is a
frequent presenter for numerous
groups exploring senior
issues and appropriate
care options. Helping to
ease the process with
knowledge, experience
and caring is one of the
greatest services Bea
brings. Here is what one
client had to say:
“Thanks to the recom

Bea Gibbs
moving my mom from New York
to Charlotte went very smoothly.
After a close friend referred me to
Bea, I called seeking her advice
regarding an assisted living com
munity and a primary care physi
cian. Bea asked numerous ques
tions regarding my mom’s needs,
her interests, religious involve
ment and personality, in order to
assess her situation.
“Upon learning about my
mom’s preferences, Bea gave us
information on a number of hous
ing alternatives as well as doctors
specializing in gerontology. We
took her advice and found both a
living situation and doctor, both of

This helped my mom to settle in
quickly and make new friends.
“We met with one of the doc
tors Bea recommended, who actu
ally is a gerontologist and it turned
out to be the referral of the centu
ry. Granted those of you who are
reading this do not know my
mother, so I hope it will suffice to
say that she can be a bit ‘difficult. ’
“Among the many tests the
doctor conducted, in the full hour
that he spent with her, was a mem
ory test. It was a pretty basic test,
just a couple of verbal and written
questions. Well, one of the ques
tions he asked mom was, what
was today’s date and what day of
the week was it. Of course mom
answered correctly, but the doctor
told her that she was wrong, it was
not Wednesday, January 7, it was
Thursday, January 8. Mom
thought she made a mistake, I
thought so too. Believe me she
doesn’t like to make mistakes. I
quickly checked my Blackberry to
find that it was indeed Wednesday
the 7th and I let both of them
know. Well, Mom, quick-witted as
she often is, said to the doctor, T
think you need your memory test
ed.’ The three of us had a great
laugh. Needless to say. Mom loves
her doctor and her new home.
Bea, thank you so much for
your wonderfril advice.”
Bea has this to say about
the job she loves so much:
“Being an advocate is
important for seniors as they
feel insecure and intimated
in many situations. It is
rewarding being in a posi
tion to service seniors as
each and every one I reach
