The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2009 - Page 19 SYlSAGOGVE^iCONGREGATIONS Put a Spiritual Warrior in Your Corner Author Rabbi Niles Goldstein to Speak at Temple Beth El Are you interested in a Judaism of brightly colored yarmulkes, edgy music, and outdoor prayer? Do you worry that Judaism hasn’t quite found its way to the 21st century yet? Do you appreciate a tell-it-like-it-is style combined with a deep love for Jewish tradi tion and concern for the Jewish future? Enter Niles Goldstein. In his award-winning Gonzo Judaism, Rabbi Niles Elliot Goldstein explores ways to create a revitalized, vibrant, joyful, edgy Judaism that will speak to young people while maintaining its authenticity and appeal for all gen erations. Goldstein mentions Charlotte’s Temple Beth El in his book as an example of “Where a Gonzo Jew Can Go.” Now Beth El is excited to welcome the original Gonzo Jew. He will speak at the 8 PM Shabbat Service on Friday, October 23. Niles Goldstein is a rabbi, a black belt, and an FBI chaplain, as well as being founder and Rabbi Emeritus of The New Shul in New York City. His essays and poetry have appeared in various national publications including Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, and The Forward. He has also been fea tured in The New York Times, Time, and The Wall Street Journal, as well as on television and radio. Whether counseling the heroes at Ground Zero, practicing karate against tough opponents, or help ing someone in his Manhattan congregation face a terminal ill ness, Goldstein has been through personal and professional trials and has come through them with valuable lessons to teach about the nature of how to become a spiritu al warrior. With an engaging and accessible style, Goldstein illus trates the qualities we need to cul tivate in order to confront adversi ty with less fear and more courage. Everyone can leam something from his experiences, whether you’re religious or not. Goldstein’s new book, and the topic of his talk, is The Challenge of the Soul. The book is a spiritual memoir that includes colorful stories such as his run-in with a pair of bears while hiking in Michigan’s remote Upper Peninsula, enduring a stint in New York City’s infamous Tombs, teaching in the Caucasus after a vicious war between Russia and Chechnya, and experiencing an early brush with death. Goldstein reaches beyond his own history and offers a program of self empowerment with lessons taken from the Bible, philosophy, psy chology, and the arts. Come and hear one of the great Jewish rabble-rousers of our time. Niles Goldstein will inspire you, disturb you, and make you want to get involved.
