The Charlotte Jewish News - March 2010 - Page 13 Chavurah Without Walls Presents “The Israeli Coffee House” The Chavurah Without Walls is hosting an Israeli Coffee House on Saturday evening March 6. Our Israeli Coffee House events capture the spirit and joy of living in Israel. We have the most authentic hot Israeli dishes made by our own Israeli chefs. There is music and dance the Israeli way. There is both live and background music and movies of Israel. There will be a live performance by our own local Israeli Folk Dance group, with some teaching to give participants the feel of dancing the Israeli way. We also have an Old Jerusalem style shuk-msxkQi place with booths that sell art jewelry and crafts. You will love the atmosphere. It is almost as good as being in Israel and eating at the local food stands, hearing the local music and walking thru the open market area. This is the eighth Israeli Coffee House and everyone agrees that they have all been lots of fun. We only wish we could have more of them. So join us in fun for an evening of Israeli music dance food entertainment and shopping. We all love the Israeli Coffee House and you will too. We are also hosting a lecture- discussion with Rabbi Powers from Temple Beth El on March 13. Rabbi Power is a professor of communication science. He will be talking about how Jewish cul ture enhances communication and understanding in daily life. As usual, a lively question-and- answer session is expected. Chavurah Without Walls is a unique chavurah, open to all Jews living in the area. We are non- denominational in that Jews from different synagoguges and parts of the Jewish community attend our meetings. We feel that our diversi ty is a strength, not a weakness. We meet in private homes and strive to provide a warm and friendly and accepting atmos phere. There is plenty of home made snacks and food to comple ment the evening activities. We believe that it does not matter so much what the activity is, so long as we come together as a commu nity of friends. We are open to exploring all things Jewish: music art film books politics history games and Torah, too. These activ ities enhances our understanding and appreciation of Judaism by providing an informal accepting and welcoming venue for different perspectives to come together and leam from each other. There are no dues at Chavurah Without Walls. As one member put it, we are “Jews without dues.” Join us on our adventure. Come eat with us and make new friends. Chavurah Without Walls gener ally meets the first Saturday night of each month. We also have an ongoing group, called Torah Without Walls, that discusses Tanach. That group generally meets the third Saturday night of each month. If there are any ques tions, please contact us at Chavurahwithoutwall@ gmail.com or call Elana at 704- 296-2752, 704-236-6080. ^ You Can Relate to This: His Mother *s Italian; His Father *s Jewish; He*s in Therapy Steve Solomon Brings His One-Man Show to Booth Playhouse, March 16-21 Questions About the Tax Credit? Interested in Investment Property? Twice the yelling, twice the guilt, twice the holidays! Steve Solomon was a lucky guy, grow ing up on Sheepshead Bay with an Italian mother and a Jewish father. With all the different dialects he heard, not just in his own family, but also in his neighborhood, he became a great imitator of many local accents, as well as a prolific writer of jokes. He spent the first part of his adult life as a school administrator on Long Island, but when the opportunity to create his one-man show presented itself, Solomon took it. And it has since become one of the longest running one- man shows on Broadway, nearly 1500 performances as of this writ ing. In Solomon’s show, you’ll meet family members who may appear familiar to you and you may find him in situations that you yourself have experienced. Who hasn’t wanted to make jokes about the TS A at the airport, as well as about how their own grandmothers try to explain keeping kosher to a non- Jew? Who doesn’t remember sit ting at the separate children’s table during holidays - even at age 50? Solomon’s real life experiences have given him a great deal of material that we all can relate to. When his mother complains to his father: “You don’t believe Jesus walked on water,” his father replies, “Sure I do ... I just think he did it the winter.” There’s something everyone can laugh at in Solomon’s show. It’s one part lasagna, one part kre- plach, two parts Prozac, and all parts hilarious. You don’t have to be Italian or Jewish to enjoy it. But it wouldn’t hurt. The show will be in Charlotte at the Booth Playhouse in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center from March 16 through March 21. Tickets available at blumenthalcenter.org or 704-372- 1000. ^ 7 r-fc Jessica Kasimov Your Local REALTOR® Coblenz Family Joins Distinctive Member Circle (Continued from previous page) (c) 704.201.5082 (o) 704.341.0279 (e) jkasimov@helenadamsrealty.com community extend their generosi ty to others through a significant tax-deductible donation.
