You have heard of Ashkenazi
Jews and Sephardic Jews, but
have you ever heard of Romaniote
Jews who trace their origin to the
Roman Empire? The Charlotte
Jewish Film Society continues its
look at the Jewish experience
around the world with this short
documentary on the Greek Jewish
community that developed when
the Byzantine Empire was all that
remained of the Roman dominion.
Directed, written and narrated
by Ed Askinazi, this documentary
is a fascinating and highly person
al portrait of a community of
Greek Jews who settled on the
Lower East Side, originally com
ing from northern of Greece.
When asked why he, a profession
al filmmaker, screenwriter, and
editor — whose work
has been screened in
international film festi
vals throughout North
America, Europe, and
Asia — chose this sub
ject, he responded, “It
was something I had to
do.” He worked on the
film for over six years,
interviewing members
of the Kehila Kedosha
Janina congregation
-which is currently in danger of
extinction.
This screening of The Last
Greeks of Broome Street is made
possible by the generous support
of the Levine Sklut Judaic Library
and the Charlotte Jewish Film
Festival. Please join us on Sunday,
December 12 at 5 PM in the Sam
Lemer Center for Cultural Arts.
Cost is $4 at the door Greek
Jewish refreshments will be avail
able.

CJDS
When we moved to Charlotte in Z009.
we were uncertain about many things,
including where we would live, shop and
get our teeth cleaned. 3ut one thing we
did know was where we would send our
children to school.
Every Jewish friend or acquaintance
who knew anything about Charlotte
consistently told us that at CJDS the
academics are second to none and that
the Judaic studies far exceed anything
I experienced as a child.
P\nd then we took the tour. We immedi
ately connected when we met with the
admissions director. Cheryl T^abinowitz. a
fellow 33Y0 alum. We could not believe
the facilities - from an impressive com
puter lab to a complete art studio. 3ut
when we sat in on a Kindergarten
Judaica class with /^orah “Rochel. we were
sold. CJDS is the perfect place for Jack.
