Soaring Through Eleven Years of Smiles
By Diana Ades
The eleventh year of Camp
SOAR (Speeial Olympies Athletie
Retreat) was held at the Levine
JCC in June and was enjoyed by
300 athletes. The number of ath
letes was a far ery from the first
Camp SOAR in 2001 whieh only
had 54 athletes and 40 volunteers.
This year’s Camp had approxi
mately 400 volunteers.
The week of June 13, the Camp
began with a “slam dunk” presen
tation from Charlotte Bobeats
President Fred Whitfield and two
of the Bobeats’ star players, DJ
Augustine and Stephen Jaekson
(sinee traded to Milwaukee).
Speeial Olympies Volunteer
Extraordinaire Bob Bowler
aeeepted a eheek for $10,000 from
the Charlotte Bobeats for operat
ing Camp SOAR.
Whitfield saw for
himself what an
amazing job Levine
JCC Assistant
Exeeutive Direetor
Barry Sehumer and
Bowler have done
with the Camp over
the last eleven
years.

tation, Augustine and Jaekson
spent time playing basketball with
the athletes and signed auto
graphs.
All week long the athletes
enjoyed various sports sueh as
tennis, basketball, boeee, volley
ball, swimming and even bowling.
They reeeived basketball
pointers from NC State
Star David Thompson
and enjoyed the star
power of veteran eollege
basketball offieial, Jamie
Luekie when he helped
out with the soeeer aetiv-
ities.
Not only did the ath
letes enjoy the sporting
aetivities, they had a
great time playing Bingo and
doing Arts and Crafts. The final
day, like years in the past, all 300
athletes enjoyed a danee, movies,
and their favorite: PIZZA!
Athlete Kim Jones wrote
“thank you for always trying to
improve the eamp and make us
athletes and our surroundings soar
higher and higher.”
Camp Soar would not be sue-
eessful without the wonderful vol
unteers from area sehools, eorpo-
rations, and the Jewish eommuni-
ty.
Volunteer Danielle Adler feels
volunteering is a life ehanging
experienee. “The main faetor that
brings me baek eaeh year is all the
huge smiles that spread aeross
eampers’ faees eaeh day,” Adler
shared.
So, 600 PB& J sandwiehes, 300
pimento eheese sandwiehes, 300
tuna fish sandwiehes, 120 pizza
pies, and more snaeks than you
ean imagine later. Camp Soar eel-
ebrates another sueeessful year.

the Camp or to volunteer for
next year, please eontaet Barry
