The desk is largely a -monurrient to Jewish survival, loss, and recov ery, and mirrors the dissolution, pain, and dire hope of each char acter.” One reviewer noted that much like The History of Love, a previ ous Temple Israel book club selec tion by Nicole Krauss, “this stun ning work showcases Krauss’s consistent talent.” In Great House the author “pulls together charac ters and stories that cross decades and continents: a poet executed by Fascists in the Spanish Civil War, Budapest on a night in 1944, New York, and Chile.” These commentaries are among the many reviews that praise Great House: A Novel, by Nicole Krauss, providing an excellent reason for choosing this book for Temple Israel’s November 15 Book Club discussion. Copies of Great House are available at the public library, the Levine-Sklul Jewish Library, at book stores, and on-line for under $15. Modern readers can also get a copy through Kindle. Like all other Temple Israel book club meetings, the November 15 discussion is open to all members of the community, including “drop-ins” and those who haven’t read the book.
