The Charlotte Jewish News - January 2013 - Page 13 New JLI course to Focus on Moral Integrity jEWIfvH l.t'AKNtN'O Ask most people if they are moral and ethieal and they will answer affirmatively. Ask them what it means to be moral and eth ieal and their answers will grow vaguer. Any honest diseussion of real-life dilemmas — eomplex re lationships with parents, the strug gle to keep eommitments, the emotionally vexing art of forgiving a grievous wrong—leads us to the realization that liv ing with integrity means faeing a non stop series of eomplex ehallenges on a daily basis. Knowing ourselves from the inside, we bear intimate witness to the magnitude of inner turmoil and diffieulty that sueh eompound ehoiees ean inspire. Sinee time immemorial, philosophers, religious figures, and politieal thinkers grappled with the question, “What is the eorreet thing to do?” This new Jewish Learning Institute eourse. Living with Integrity: Navigating Everyday Moral Dilemmas, offers a unique approaeh based on the wisdom of the Torah and Jewish law on ethies. At its eore lies an understand ing of what we instinetively hear as a vague inner voiee that ur gently insists, “Matters of eosmie importanee are being played out through the minute ehoiees of our daily lives.” Deep within, we sense that what we often disregard as trifiing — a easual eomment. an ineonsequential aet—somehow matters a great deal. The integrity of eaeh human being, not only our publie figures, eonveys destiny- altering, universal import. This eourse will open new vis tas of moral awareness. The Torah takes us along a path that requires an artful balanee. It does not sup press the eomplexity of the ehoiees we faee by offering the false refuge of simplistie formulas. Neither does it surrender to the eynieism and de spair that an overly hon est lens may be tempted to suggest. Rather, it em powers us to embraee the ehallenge by providing the knowledge that we require in navigating our daily tasks aeeompanied by a elear, eo- herent, and eompetent sense of moral purpose. This eourse is designed to help us identify our personal eore of in tegrity and to diseover methods of engaging it regularly in our every day deeisions, thereby establish ing our moral eharaeter within the world. The eourse is drawn from aneient wisdom that eontinues to inform and inspire humanity, sharpens awareness of the issues, and empowers a better today and even brighter tomorrow. The JLI eourse will be offered for six eonseeutive weeks with evening elasses on Tuesdays and morning elasses on Wednesday. The first elass will begin on Janu ary 29, 7:30 PM and again on Jan uary 30, 11 AM. All elasses will Past and Present for Havurat Tikvah Even with the short winter days and eold weather of January, Havurat Tikvah is keeping plenty busy. We had a wonderful Hanukkah eelebration in early De- eember, and we took the opportu nity to eat ehoeolate gelt in abundanee. In the first weekend of Deeem- ber. Rabbi Steve Sager eame to our Havurat for a seeond install ment of the programs he is plan ning with us this year. In an Jewish Reconstructionist Federation 1# (if Rabbi Steve Sager evening workshop, the founder and direetor of Sicha from Durham diseussed what hospital ity means to our havurah and eommunify and how that defines us. An aneient story and a modem Israeli poem was used to address the “life-affirming nature of ‘tzedakah’ and ‘hesed.’” These important words in the standard Jewish voeabulary are often mis interpreted as synonyms for “eharify.” In reality, when “hesed” is direetly translated into English, it means “lovingkindness.” At the workshop, we refieeted on how the meaning of these signifieant words ean shape our views and form Jewish life. This was the seeond of four in stallments of Rabbi Steve Sager’s programs with our havurah. The first workshop took plaee this past fall, and the remaining ones will oeeur throughout this new year, with one eoming up on Mareh 3 and the last part taking plaee on May 19. If you are interested, please visit our website. If you were unable to make the previous two meetings, you ean still find plenty to enjoy and learn from these upeoming sessions and we eneourage you to join us. Havurat Tikvah’s teen group, now partnered with another youth group from the Kol Ami eongre- gation in Charlotte, has also been very busy reeently, as we are gear ing up for a paeked and exeiting year.
