On January 6, the Jewish
Federation of Greater Charlotte,
the Levine Jewish Community
Center’s Visual and Performing
Arts Department, and the Jazz
Arts Initiative of Charlotte had
the honor of hosting members of
the Jazz ensemble from Israel’s
Thelma Yellin High Sehool of
the Arts for a eommunity wide
performanee. This unique event
is part of the Federation’s Israel
@ 65 Initiative that eelebrates
the 65th anniversary of the State
of Israel.
The prestigious Thelma
Yellin High Sehool in Tel Aviv
is home to some of Israel’s most
talented musieal teens and is
dedieated to helping artistieally
talented youth develop their
skills in a variety of artistie spe-
eialties. Ten seniors were se-
leeted from their Jazz group to
travel to the US and take part in
one of the most premier Jazz
eonferenees in the world, the
2013 Jazz Edueation Network
Conferenee in Atlanta.
Prior to this performanee, the
group led a Master Class that in-
eluded exeeptionally talented
Charlotte area high sehool mu-
sieians from the Jazz Arts Initia
tive’s All Star team as well as
the general eommunity. The
Master Class gave the teens an
opportunity to learn from one
another and led to a meaningful
dialogue between the two eul-
tures through their eommon lan
guage- musie.
Lonnie Davis, Exeeutive Di-
reetor and President of the Jazz
Arts Initiative, stated “I believe
that the interaetion between the
student groups was genuine and
prieeless.” One parent eom-
