The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2013 - Page 5 “Our Judaism Today” with Temple Beth El’s Clergy Temple Beth El University's Winter Session Wednesdays, February 13, 20 and 27; 7-9 PM at Temple Beth El Rabbi Judy Schindler, Rabbi Jonathan Freirich, and Cantor Mary Thomas will discuss the sources of the Judaism we learn and practice today, and then share how we make our lives vibrant with Jewish ideas, rituals, prac tices and actions. Session 1 - February 13 - Sa cred Learning with Rabbi Jonathan What makes our learning Jew ish? Flow we study matters more than what we study. Read, learn, and discuss as we examine Jewish thinking as a pathway to greater meaning. Even Martin Luther King, Jr’s “I Flave a Dream” speech can be read Jewishly. Session 2 - February 20 - Sa cred Living with Cantor Mary We will explore some of the el ements of rich, daily Jewish liv ing, including food, prayer, and Rabbi Jeremy and Rabbi Micah Return to Temple Beth El for Weekend of Lifelong Learning Friday and Saturday, February 8-9 r*—A O' As Temple Beth cel ebrates its seven decades of learning, we invite back as Sadie Levin Scholars-in- Residence Rabbi Je remy Barras and Rabbi Micah Streiffer to fur ther open the well- spring of wisdom within our Torah. On Friday night, at a special 7 PM Shabbat service, our guest rabbis will lead a sermon in dialogue entitled “Mishpatim - The Laws of Life long Learning.” On Saturday morning, at our Congregational Shabbat Workshops from 9-10:15 AM, Rabbis Barras and Streiffer will lead a study of sacred texts entitled “Ancient Midrash and Modem Midrash: Find ing Ourselves in Jewish Texts.” A Congrega tional Brunch will fol low ($8/members and $10/non-members). We will then move into our annual Arthur Tirsun Education and Teacher Appreciation Shabbat honoring our commu nity educators, which f M Rabbi Micah Streiffer Rabbi Jeremy Barras Lox Box Will Arrive March 17 What is a Lox Box? It is a de licious breakfast for four, consist ing of four bagels, cream cheese, lox, an onion, orange juice, and four donuts. Temple Solel is hav ing its first annual lox box fundraiser on Sunday morning March 17. To enjoy a lox box, you have to purchase it in ad vance. This can be done by going to the Temple Solel web site, www.templesolelsc.org and click ing on the Pay-Pal link. The cost of this wonderful breakfast is $22. Your lox box will be available for pick-up between 8 and 10:30 AM at one of three convenient pick-up points (Shalom Park in the Tem ple Beth El parking lot, Flarris TEMPLE SOLEI Teeter Sun City parking lot in In dian Land, and Fort Mill in York County). A lox box will only be available for purchase on the Temple Solel web site from Feb ruary 1st thm Febraary 28. Temple Solel is a reform con gregation in Fort Mill, SC with a strong social action commitment. The Lox Box project will help them to reach some of their Tikkun olam goals. Session 3 - Febraary 27 - Sa cred Action with Rabbi Judy We will explore the roots of Ju daism’s Tikkun Olam from the passion of the prophets to mysti cism to modern day Reform Ju daism. Do some mitzvot take precedence over others? Flow does our tradition guide us in bal ancing our own needs with the compelling needs of our commu nity?
