As of today, there are 1,132
Jewish Ameriean athletes and
eoaehes that will eomprise Team
USA. They eome from 37 States,
the Distriet of Columbia, and Is
rael. Representing Charlotte is
Rabbi Noam Raueher of Temple
Israel.
“I’m really exeited to be going
to Israel for the 19th Maeeabiah
games,” Rabbi Raueher says.
“This will be my seeond time at
tending the games in Israel. Last
time was in the Summer of 2005,
just before beginning rabbinieal
sehool. Then I went as a Team
Manager, but this time I’ll be
going as Team Rabbi. Just before
last year’s high holidays, I was
eontaeted by Maeeabiah’s eentral
offiee and told that I was on a
short list for the position. They
told me about the job, set up some
interviews, and the rest is history.”
The Maeeabiah Games are
about more than sports eompeti
tion. They are an opportunity for
Jewish athletes from around the
world to eonvene in Israel for an
elite athletie eompetition and to
explore their eommon eulture and
heritage in the historie Jewish
homeland. “We take athletes that
happen to be Jewish, to eompete
in the Maeeabiah Games,”
Bukantz eommented. “But we re
turn home with Jewish athletes
who have a renewed sense of
pride in their Judaism and in-
ereased support for the State of Is
rael.”
Rabbi Raueher adds, “In addi
tion to typieal elergy responsibili
ties I’ll get a ehanee to do some
teaehing and get to frame their ef
forts in athleties and friendly eom
petition in a Jewish way. My
partner in erime. Rabbi Daniel
Greyber of Raleigh, and I have
been appointed ‘spiritual eoaehes’
for the games. ... The pageantry,
friendships, spirit of Jewish unity,
and feats of athletieism will fill
my soul (and give me plenty of
material for future sermons). ...”
The Maeeabiah Games are the
third largest international sporting
event in the world, after the Sum
mer Olympies and the Pan Am
Games. There will be over 8,500
partieipants from 70 eountries at
the 19th World Maeeabiah
Games. ^
