An Affiliate of the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte ^ ' X Vol. 35, No. 7 Av-Elul 5773 August 2013 It’s a Boy! Meet Our New Shaliach, Dor Hollander... Arriving Sept. 9 My name is Dor Hollander, and I am the new Shaliaeh of the Jew ish Federation of Greater Char lotte. While I’m writing those lines on my laptop here in Israel, my mind is drifting away with dreams and expeetations for this year as your emissary - and hon estly, I just ean’t wait to meet eaeh and every one of you. But first things first, let me start by pre senting myself. I am 23 years old and I live in a small eity named Giv’atayim, whieh borders with Tel Aviv. I lived my entire life in this great metropolis of Israel, and the urban atmosphere has always attraeted me to diseover new plaees, to meet new people, and to explore the Israeli eulture from its modem origins. My father Yaron and my mother Shira raised me as a single ehild for nine years. Then eame my brother Omri, and a year later my sister Noa. Sure, there’s a big age gap between my siblings and me, but perhaps the eountless hours of playing with them was what drew me to the field of eoun- seling (well, alongside the faet that half of my family are teaehers themselves). My family moved to Giv’atayim right before my fresh man year. Sinee I did not know anyone in my elass, I immediately joined every after-sehool program available - “Young Leaders,” “Young Field Guides,” “The Mu- nieipal Youth Couneil,” and the seouts, too. This deeision forever ehanged my life, and eliehe as it sounds, “soeial involvement” be- eame a matter of supreme value for me. When I finished my senior year, I was eager to enlist for the most signifieant position that the IDF eould offer me. For the “priee” of an extra year of army serviee, I was trained as an Intel- ligenee analyst in an elite unit. After two and a half years in my unit, I was ehosen to eommand my unit’s first training eourse - whieh was the peak of my serviee. When the training eourse was over, I was sent by IDF and the Jewish Ageney for Israel delega tion as a eounselor in Camp B’nai B’rith of Ottawa. This last summer abroad, among ehildren and young adults from Canada’s biggest Jewish eommunities, was the opening shot for my quest after my Jewish roots and the spiritual eonneetion we all share. I am positive that I will have an amazing experienee in your eommunity, and I hope our mutual work will form strong and speeial eonneetions. I wish you all Shanah Tovah and a happy new year.
