Over the past deeade, the festival’s direetors - Debby Bloek (2005- 2006), Jodi Greenwald (2007-2011), Jeff Turk (2012-2013) and Riek Willenzik (eurrent) - have worked tirelessly with their dedieated teams of volunteers, united by the singular vi sion of ereating a eul- tural event that would exeite, edueate and engage our eommu nity. So how has an all-volunteer based organization grown from a one-day event in 2005 into a month-long eultural eelebration in 2014? Debby, Jodi, Jeff, and Riek all agree that the CJFF would not be possible without the round-the- eloek efforts of its eommittee members and volunteers as well as the eontinuing support from sponsoring organizations, eorpo- rate partners, patrons, eommunity partners, and of eourse, audienee members. 'Hunting Elephants ’ The direetors also agree on the reasons that the festival earns the dedieation and loyalty of filmgo- ers of all ages. The CJFF provides an insular, non-threatening aeeess point for people to plug into their eommunity, whether it’s for so- eial, eultural, or religious reasons. Film is the perfeet medium to help them eonneet and identify with their friends, neighbors, and eom munity members. By ehoosing movies that have stories, eharae- ters, and themes with universal appeal, the CJFF has made it easy for people from all walks of life to get together to laugh, ery, think, feel, and learn. What does the fu ture hold for the CJFF? Debby, Jodi, Jeff, and Riek firmly believe that if the festival ended tomorrow, the eom munity wouldn’t stand for it. There would be sueh an outery that someone would piek up the reins and start everything up again very quiekly - the CJFF has beeome that intrieate and important to our eommunity. Now one of Charlotte’s most aeelaimed and respeeted film festivals, the CJFF is well positioned to break new ground as it eontinues to at- traet wider audienees and bring the best of the world’s einema to our region. The above was consolidated from a January 2 interview with Debby Block, Jodi Greenwald, and Jeff Turk as well as a Q&A with Rick Willenzik For more information about the 2014 CJFT, visit charlottejew- ishfilm.com.^ lOii, JEWISH^ FEDEW10N5 TIE r OF cnEATen CHAnLox DAS SAH ‘Zaytoun ’ Remembering Sharon.
