Celebrating Our Teens:
Past, Present, and Future
The Prophet Joel spoke these
words, “Tell your ehildren of it
and your ehildren will tell their
ehildren, and their ehildren will
pass it on to another generation.”
Passing on the teaehings of Ju
daism is the way to guarantee the
future of the Jewish people. At
Temple Beth El, we not only teaeh
our ehildren, we turn our ehildren
into teaehers.
On May 16, Temple Beth El
will have a speeial Shabbat serviee
to honor the more than 20 years
our teens have beeome madriehim
(assistant teaehers), B’nei Mitzvah
tutors, eompanions of speeial
needs students, and teehnology,
art, and musie assistants. “Cele
brating Our Teens: Past, Present
and Future” honors a program that
originally started out with a few
interested teenagers and has
grown into a multifaeeted pro
gram that engages more than 150
during the sehool year.
In affirming our eommitment to
our Beth El teen madriehim of the
past, present, and future, we are
working to finaneially seeure the
program through both our Steven
Gainsboro Teen Edueator Fund
and our Madriehim Endowment.
To support and eelebrate our Tem
ple Beth El teens, join us for a
Shabbat filled with the musie from
our Teen Band, Teen Voeal En
semble, Song Leaders, and Jew
TuBE refieetions.
Teaehing and mentoring is not
an easy task and our young adults
take their positions very se
riously. Like our dedieated
Religious Sehool teaehers,
our madriehim must eon-
tinue to study and deepen
their own knowledge of Ju
daism by eontinuing their
Jewish edueation at the
Consolidated High Sehool
of Jewish Studies. Our
madriehim serve as role
models who deeply enrieh
the lives of our students. We
have ereated an environ
ment in whieh students en-
thusiastieally seek to
eontinue as assistants in our Reli
gious Sehool or as B’nei Mitzvah
tutors after they have eompleted
seventh grade, rather than enter
taining the idea that they are fin
ished with their Jewish edueation.
Serving as a madrieh or madrieha
not only enriehes our students ed-
ueational experienee but goes so
mueh further by touehing their
lives personally and spiritually.

in our program writes, “It’s a re

I love helping students develop
their Jewish identity. My first year
I taught 3rd grade and now I’m tu
toring those same kids for their
bar/bat mitzvahs. It’s erazy how
fast the time goes by. The true
benefit of having madriehim is the
relationship that is formed with
the kids. Sinee I’m only a eouple
years older than my students, they
view me as a friend or an older sis
ter. It’s easier for them to express
themselves and their ideas about
Judaism. I love the program, and I
think it keeps students engaged
and teenagers involved after their
bar/bat mitzvahs.”

music madriehim, Caleb Seidler, Sam Liss,

Parents also value the
madriehim experienee and reeog-
nize the positive impaet it has on
the lives of their teens. Gwen Or-
