October is Domestic Violence Month:
Take a Stand
Headlines tell the story daily:
Professional footballers Ray Riee
and Greg Hardy eonvieted of
domestie violenee. President
Obama announees that dating vi
olenee at eollege eampuses is
reaehing epidemie proportions.
Stati sties show that some form of
abuse exists in one in three teen
relationships and in one in four
homes.
Oetober is Domestie Violenee
Awareness Month, and sinee
2009, 19 Jewish ageneies in
Charlotte have banded together to
reeognize this impor
tant eause. Onee again
this year, these agen
eies are aetively en-
eouraging all of us to
take a visible stand
against domestie abuse
in our Jewish eommu-
nity and to follow the
Jewish values of en-

suring justiee and help
ing those in need. Si-
lenee, standing still and
misinformation perpe
trate abuse.
In spite of the agen
eies’ efforts, fewer peo
ple in our Jewish
eommunity are eoming
forward today to ask for
help. “Vietims often
avoid speaking out beeause they
believe they are alone, are
ashamed or are afraid that others
will judge them,” explains
Stephanie Starr, Exeeu
tive Direetor of Jewish
Family Serviees. “Do
mestie violenee is about
power and eontrol by the
abuser and that’s why
it’s important that our
eommunity work to
gether to support the vie-
tim so he or she feels

safe in knowing that
eoming forward will
lead to positive
ehanges,” says Starr.
Sue Worrel, Exee
utive Direetor of the
Jewish Federation
(whieh helped un
derwrite the initial
eampaign in 2009)
wholeheartedly
agrees. “Creating a safe haven is
the job of the entire Jewish eom
munity,” says Worrel. “Whether
it is a member of a Temple, the
Jewish Community Center, a
young adult at Moishe House, or
a senior attending Oasis, a vietim
of abuse should feel believed, ae-
eepted, eared for, and proteeted
going to anyone in our ageneies,”
says Worrel. “It is no easy task,
but we are eommitted to making
that happen.”
