The Charlotte Jewish News - October 2014 - Page 2 t i i i i i JEWISH FEDERATION NEWS Protective Edge: Over But Not Quite By Adi Rodavsky, Shlicha. As the media in Israel and throughout the world were happy to announee, operation Proteetive Edge has eome to a hopefully lasting end; yet many in Israel, myself ineluded, have their eoneems. One of the eauses for Israel launehing Op eration Proteetive Edge has been the terror tunnels from Gaza to the south of Israel. One of Hamas’ aspirations was to send terrorists on massive terror at- taeks during the High Holidays. As an Israeli with family living around Gaza, I find myself eoneerned for their safety on a daily basis. Israel’s history with Hamas shows that there ean be periods of lasting eease fires whieh ean abruptly turn into times of war. The month-long eease fire between Hamas and Israel hardly indieates that Hamas’ motivation for terror at- taeks during the High Holidays has ehanged. Faeing sueh eir- eumstanees, everything from starting the sehool year to eele- brating Sukkot ean be stressful. Time will tell if Hamas will not break this eease fire as it has broken the ones that eame prior to it. Sukkot, however, reminds us of the simple dwellings of the people of Israel during their journey in in the desert. The people of Israel have spent 40 years wandering the desert on their way to the Promised Land. It ean be said that the Israeli people have been wandering for 66 years on the diffieult, unpre- dietable path to peaee. Our peo ple are known for their patienee.
