Please take the time to read her story and thank her for her generosity. It is our hope that you will be inspired and encour aged to think about how you can create your own Jewish legacy. By Margi L. Goldstein Julius and I moved to Charlotte in January 1952. We had been married one year and were expeet- ing our first ehild. He was from Gastonia and I was from Barn well, SC, a town of 1,900 people. three Jewish families, no syna gogue, no Torah, no Rabbi, no He brew sehool. We didn’t reeeive a formal Jewish edueation but had a strong Jewish identity. Our par ents kept kosher, observed all hol idays, and eaeh house had a blue box to reeeive Tzedakah, almost every day. Our arrival in Charlotte was our big ehanee to live a Jewish life within a Jewish eommunity. We moved on a Tuesday and the next week I was folding bulletins at Temple Israel on Dilworth Road. There were meetings, rehearsals for musieal produetions, fundrais Our Jewish Community’s Newest Legacy Gifts There are now 273 individu- als/families throughout our Jew ish eommunity who have ineluded a loeal Jewish organiza tion in their legaey plans ereating 541 unique legaeies. We thank the following individuals/families who have reeently informed our eommunity, through Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Commu nity (FCJC) or one of the ten Cre ate Your Jewish Legaey eommu nity partners, that they have ereated a legaey gift to support the future of Charlotte’s Jewish eom munity. The Charlotte Jewish eommu nity provided the tools that we needed to be the Jewish family we would beeome. Temple Israel, UJA, Hadassah, BBYO, the He brew Cemetery, and the Federa tion all reeeived our eommitment and many hours as volunteers. The eommunity flourished and we were the benefieiaries. Through my mind’s kaleido- seope of memories I ean still see and feel the joy of my ehildren and my grandehildren’s B’nai Mitzvahs. At the age of 65, I too beeame a Bat Mitzvah girl. Julius died in 2007. We had 56 years to gether. I was privileged to have shared my life with this truly lov ing, kind, and generous man. People ask me why, at my age, I am still an aetivist in the Jewish eommunity. My answer is simple. My foeus in reeent years has been Temple Israel. I believe the future for Jewish life in Ameriea begins in the synagogue. This is where the seed for Jewish life is planted. That seed is nourished by Hebrew sehools, junior eongregations, rabbis, eantors, and teaehers. This is where ehildren, with their niek- els, dimes, and quarters learn to praetiee Tzedakah. Someday, these ehildren will ensure the sue- eess of Jewish institutions through their own philanthropy. If I truly love Judaism, it is my duty to per petuate this belief I am honored to have served as eo-ehair of the Book of Life dur ing its inaugural year. As a family that has reeeived so mueh, it is my responsibility to endow the future for our ehildren and the genera tions to follow. ^ PrepZowvfngk iy ter your loved/ one4r.
