The Charlotte Jewish News - February 2015 - Page 28 Jewish Family Services Eleventh Annual Senior Hanukkah Party Brings Joy to Over 160 Jewish Seniors Joyous conversations, kisses on the cheek, hugs all around, dancing in the aisles, delicious latkes, and then there was complete quiet ... and then .... “Ya ha deedle deedle, bubba bubba deedle deedle dum,” as Viva Klezmer lit up the room with “If I Were a Rich Man.” These were the sights and sounds seen and heard at the 11th annual Hanukkah party, hosted by Jewish Family Services on December 18. Norman Steinberger, a Statesville-native, long-time member of both Temple Beth El and Temple Israel, and loyal, philanthropic, dedicated pillar of our community, sponsors this annual event, which came out of a brainstorm 11 years ago with Bea Gibbs of blessed memory, when she served as the Senior Outreach Specialist for Jewish Family Services. What started as a simple idea to bring together the Jew ish senior adults who Bea visited has become a significant collaboration between Jewish Family Services, Oasis Sen ior Enrichment Program, and Temple Israel and continues to attract senior adults who are connected with each of these programs. Usually held in Gorelick Hall on Shalom Park, this year’s celebration was moved to the Sam Lemer Cultural Center in order to hold the growing crowd. Over 160 senior adults were in attendance, plus our volunteers and staff. This year special invitations were mailed to all members of our JFS Legacy Family Circle. These individuals and families have included JFS in their legacy plans, further exemplifying their support of and commitment to ensuring that Jewish Family Services is a viable source of commu nity support for future generations who will face new chal lenges. A special table was reserved for these individuals, and allowed them to see how their vision will be continued in the future. The Hanukkah party is one of the few times each year when isolated seniors living on their own or in long term care communities can come together and feel a sense of to getherness and Jewishness. JFS thanks our donors and our community for their gen erosity, as well as specific thanks to Norman Steinberger and the blessed memories of Bea Gibbs. ^ Henry Hirschman, party sponsor Norman Steinberger, and Leigh Ja cobson.
