Bob and Anne Yudell are
among the 287 individuals and

The Jewish eommunity in
Charlotte was mueh smaller when
we arrived in 1960. To us, Char
lotte was the ideal plaee in whieh
to live and raise our four daugh
ters. Although we didn’t know
anyone here, we beeame aetive in
the larger as well as the Jewish
eommunity.
Bob grew up in New Bern,
NC, a small town with few Jew
ish families. Without a rabbi liv
ing in town, a student rabbi eame
to lead High Holiday serviees.
There were only a eouple of Jew
ish students in his high sehool. A
strong eonneetion to Judaism was
instilled by his parents. He re-
eeived his undergraduate and
medieal degrees from Duke Uni
versity where he met Anne, a
UNCG student. After marriage
in 1953, Navy internship, and
Washington D.C. resideney, we
moved to Charlotte to open an
ophthalmology praetiee.
We found Charlotte very ae-
eepting although at that time
there were some neighborhoods

Temple Beth El beeame an im
portant part of our lives. Bob
served as president of Temple
Beth El and was a Board member
for twenty-two years. He was
also a member of the Jewish
Family Serviees Board and or
ganized the Maimonides Soeiety
for Jewish medieal professionals.
Anne was raised in a kosher
home in NJ, attended twelve
years of Sunday sehool, sang in
the ehoir and was eonfirmed be
fore Israel beeame a state in 1948.
Formerly employed by Duke
University and General Eleetrie,
she later opened ballet studios in
Maryland and North Carolina,
with proeeeds going to Jewish
eharities. As an opera singer and
symphony player of the flute and
pieeolo, Anne enriehed religious
serviees with her ehamber or-
ehestra and interdenominational
liturgieal daneers. Sunday sehool
teaehing and fostering interfaith
relations were priorities. She
seulpted the Psalm lintel stone
over Temple Beth EFs sanetuary
door and the marble eomerstone
in the Levine Jewish Community
Center.
We feel it is important to assist
finaneially in order to perpetuate
the Jewish values and institutions
that have served us so well over
the years. We remember that the
Torah teaehes us to leave the eor-
ner of the fields for the needy. ^
