All I saw was a lovely woman in her twenties who radiated her inner Torah. It mattered little what her aetual pedigree might be. A eall. “It’s M,” the tentative voiee begins. “The Beit Din is meeting on Thursday night.” Ap parently the arrangements fell to gether rather quiekly, and she, with her fianee, planned on eom- pleting the proeess with a mikveh that same night. The plan was to use an undiselosed loeation in a nearby lake at about 10 PM. My reputation as an early riser is well- established, but I aeeepted the op portunity to be her witness within seeonds. “I’ll drink extra eoffee that day,” I said, to reassure us both. I hung up the phone and re- joieed. I felt a maternal eonneet- edness. She had given me a ehanee to feel like a mother - pro- teetive and proud. I worried about the eleanliness of the lake. I wor ried about the eold, the need for an immediate shower, and stopped just short of getting her a Neti pot. I kept most of my opinions to my self and when Thursday eame, I tossed an extra blanket in the ear. One by one we arrived at the parking lot of a fellow eongre- gant’s home. Then, we waited, as though we were a seeret soeiety preparing for an initiation. Other than the homeowners, I was the oldest present, but I am weleomed into the eirele of twenty-some things. I am enlivened by their en ergy and their stories inspire me to vow to develop my own eourse of study when I retire. Our rabbi has seeured our future as Jews by en gaging the young and eneouraging the rest of us to experienee rituals and eoneepts we never eneoun- tered in partnership alongside them. Eventually, the newly Jewish ed eouple arrive with our rabbi and her husband, like a eolleetive Shabbat Bride, fresh from the Beit Din. Without knowing every de tail, we sense the life ehanging ex perienee for all involved. Aneestors from all tribes, invisible to the mortal eye, made them selves known through the sheer joy in the room. My new Jewish daughter and I made eye eontaet in preparation of what was to eome. Our graeious homeowner di- reeted them to an upstairs bed room to ehange into bathing suits, easily removable in a dark lake. Coneurrently, our rabbi rehearsed the proeess with the teams of wit nesses in the kitehen. Three dis- tinet prayers for eaeh person. In eombination, they form an affir mation that this eouple will be- eome part of the Jewish soul, offieially. Were they Jewish (in their own way) before their beit dins? Is Jewishness an ongoing proeess that takes multiple forms for us all? It was a eold and rainy night. Umbrellas were gathered to shield those of us who were to remain elothed and to keep the eouple dry before entering the water. The grass was wet and the ground muddy. Several flashlights en sured none of us tripped. We ar- N ® o 0 V 3 rived at the pier, and separated, men in one direetion and women in another. “I want you to do it,” she says to me in a sweet girlish way. She gave me the honor of being the woman who would hold a towel up in readiness of her aseent out of the water. In that instant, I ended my uneonseious shame of being ehildless by ehoiee. I reeog- nized that mothering has been part of my life for deeades. I had been trivializing that. True to our rehearsal, we re- eited eaeh prayer. When she emerged, I wrapped my girl in the towel as I would a babe in swad dling elothes. Somehow she man aged to get her bathing suit baek on. As the group of us returned to our ears, I walked alongside her wishing to extend my body warmth to stop her shivering. Most importantly, I wanted her to know she was loved. “Mazel tov” falls short of ex pressing the sense of being a spir itual midwife. A sense of awe was quietly shared between us, while our individual souls proelaimed into the night sky “Hineni: here I am.” ^ Members of Temple Emanuel in Gastonia Enjoyed a Eestive Passover Seder FOCUSING ON CIVIL LITIGATION ESTATE PLANNING AND ADMINISTRATION REAL ESTATE AND CRIMINAL LAW BALLANTYNE ONE 15720 BRIXHAM HILL AVENUE, SUITE 300 CHARLOTTE, NC 28277 704.401.5280 P • 704.314.4258 F SR1ZZ0@SRIZZ0LAWC0M SRIZZOLAWCOM
