Shavit diseussed the two Jewish miraeles the founding and ereation of the state of Israel and the strong vibrant Ameriean Jewish eommunity that thrives alongside Israel. Shavit eommended the strong work of the Ameriean Jewish eommunity, partieularly Federa tions, aeross the eountry that are helping to ensure Jewish eontinu- ity. Despite these two wondrous miraeles, Shavit aeknowledged both miraeles are eurrently being ehallenged. Shavit went on to state the internal ehallenges faeing Is rael ineluding deep divides in Is raeli soeiety as well as inereasing soeial gaps and the eurrent flawed politieal system. Shavit explained several exter nal ehallenges eurrently faeing Is rael ineluding Iran, its unfortunate geographieal loeation and regional security issues in the midst of much Arab chaos, and of course the continuing perilous Palestinian situation. Shavit pointed out his concerns with recent decades of the eroding American Israeli al liance and found this most trou bling. Shavit also focused on the challenges facing American Jews including the millennial genera tional gap and its disconcerting commitment and losing dedication to Israel. Shavit implored Char lotte’s Jewish community to find inventive methods to attract this younger generation, educating them and instilling in them a love and support of Israel, by following the example of our Zionist elders who possessed a unique vision and enduring spirit. Shavit ended his lecture by stating that the future of both the United States and Israel is intertwined, and we cannot exist without each other. At the conclusion of the evening, Shavit led an informal discussion about bias against Israel in the media with students of Tem ple Beth El’s confirmation class.
