Discover Yourself at Hebrew High’s “Portrait of
An Artist”
Taking the ordinary and making it ex
traordinary was the goal of Hebrew High’s
art elass “Portrait of An Artist.” By studying
the work of Israeli artist Hanoeh Piven, stu
dents set out to ereate eollage eharaeters
made from food, random objeets and seraps
of materials. We talked a lot about the things
Piven used to ereate his earieatures, sueh as
feathers for eyebrows, buttons for eyes, and
spaghetti for hair. We foeused on how we
see our Jewish and seeular selves and set out
to find objeets that would portray those im
ages in a self-portrait?
Onee we gathered our materials, the fun
and playfulness started as we reinvented the
meaning of the objeets we used to tell our
story. Eaeh portrait gives insight to who that
person is, how they see themselves, and how
they want the rest of us to see them. It was a
journey of diseovery as the portraits eame to
life.
