tend the 19th Annual Comparative
Religion Series, “Polities and Re
ligion: Where is the Line?” From
January through Mareh, the series
will examine eurrent and histori-
eal perspeetives regarding reli
gious beliefs and politieal
aetivities and whether religious
viewpoints have any role in our
politieal debate. Religious leaders
representing several Charlotte
area faiths; politieians sharing
eonservative, moderate, and lib
eral viewpoints; and legal eoun-
selors providing various legal
perspeetives on religion and poli
ties will diseuss how religious in
stitutions have approaehed
politieal issues within their eon-
gregations, what key judieial de-
eisions have set the boundaries for
that politieal involvement, and
how the legal lines have ehanged
aeross the deeades. Our guest lee-
turers will provide eompelling an
swers to sueh questions as: How
ean religious institutions be effee-
tive in ereating politieal and soeial
ehange within the eonfines of the
law? What judieial deeisions
have had the most impaet on reli
gious institutions? Should per
sonal religious beliefs of eleeted
offieials influenee their behavior
in earrying out their duties?
Rabbi Judith Sehindler, Senior
Rabbi of Temple Beth El, will
provide an introduetion to the Se
ries on January 26 whieh will
deepen our understanding of the
eourse of study, and will eneour-
age us to engage in thought-pro
voking diseussions with our guest
leeturers.
The series will take plaee at
Temple Beth El (5101 Providenee
Road, Charlotte, NC 28226). Ses
sions will run from 7-9 PM on six
eonseeutive Tuesday evenings,
beginning January 26. Edueators
and religious leaders representing
Judaism, Buddhism, Conservative
Protestantism, Liberal Protes
tantism, Roman Catholieism,
Islam, and Baptist faiths will offer
their points of view. Throughout
the eourse of the six week series,
they will be joined by panels of
guests who will add joumalistie,
politieal, and aeademie assess
ments in response to your ques
tions on the topie “Polities and
Religion: Where is the Line?”
