The Charlotte Jewish News - August 2016 - Page 23 Shalom Park Green Initiatives Take Flight Across the Park By Yonatan Thull I have a dream of a greener to morrow. My name is Yonatan and I am a “Passionate ADHD Soeial Justiee Visionary.” The visions on the map reprinted here are mine alone in no way representative of any organi zation, eommittee, or ageney on the park. But here is some of the work being done to realize this vi sion. Green Movement Gets Some Much Needed Support from LJCC CEO Peter Blair and Other Park Agencies I was honored to meet Mr. Blair who spoke with me about the Green Movement on the park and his past involvement with other sustainability projeets. I was very impressed by his extensive expe- rienees helping Jewish Commu nity Centers transition to being more energy effieient. He shared with me his thoughts about shift ing to renewable energy at the LJCC. It seems to me, that he has the knowledge base and a sound plan to inerementally shift us to wards a greener park. Meanwhile, he is very supportive of the many projeets already in plaee and he looks forward to seeing the growth of sustainability on the park. Along with this meeting, I have had the pleasure of speaking with representatives from aeross the park who have weleomed me and expressed their eommitment to en gaging in soeial aetion through Ju- daie Environmentalism. Shalom Park Wildlife and Bird Habitat Another amazing projeet to strengthen the wildlife habitat on the park was sparked by the Tem ple Beth El 2016 eonfirmation elass. I told them “we are eom- manded, just as Adam and Eve were, to eare for the earth and pro- teet Adonai’s Gardens.” I went on to explain to them the importanee of saving our native songbirds, whieh are quiekly deereasing in population size. But in partieular, I foeused on the Brown Headed Nuthateh bird, who are at even greater risk of beeoming endan gered due to their small size. To make sure I knew what I was doing, I began to researeh bird habitats. In the proeess I eonneeted with the NC Bluebird Assoeiation, NC Audubon Soeiety, and the Wildlife Federation. The Audubon Soeiety has helped out a lot and eonneeted us with a lot of re- sourees. First, we were eonneeted with the leaders of a loeal girl seouts group who made bird- houses and then deeided to donate all of their eookie money to buy more birdhouses. They are giving us their 40 brown-headed nuthateh houses. Along with those houses, we are getting several other dona tions and when this projeet is eom- pleted, we will have 54 bird- houses. We have engaged multiple Girl Seouts troops ineluding the JCC troop, to not only install the habitat but to help with numbering the boxes and eolleeting data for the wildlife organizations. This as- peet of the projeet is essential in helping them eolleet more aeeu- rate numbers of these populations. Keep Charlotte Beautiful Wants to Partner to Help Keep Shalom Park Beautiful I got to meet with the eounty Neighborhood Resouree Liaison and Keep Charlotte Beautiful Pro gram Manager. She has indieated that by partnering with her offiee that we ean potentially have aeeess to state and loeal grants for our green movement. One of the proj eets she asked us to do is the road adoption program and I asked if we eould adopt Jefferson Road. It turns out it is available and I am getting an offieial adoption to hap pen. I have also heard talk about some groups replenishing the water sourees like reservoirs and ereeks on the park, whieh will be essential to the habitat preserva tion and ereation of a more bal- anee eeo-system. There is also the possibility of adopting the ereek that runs through the Park whieh we will work to keep elean. Charlotte Latin School (CLS) Goes Green I met the Seienee Department Chair and Environmental Sustain ability Coordinator of the CLS. I really enjoyed hearing about their proj eet and I think we have a lot to learn from them. They have done some pretty extraordinary projeets in redueing their waste stream and deereasing their eleetrieity eon- sumption. From this eonversation I realized how we ean ereate a sus tainable projeet for years to eome through footprint reduetion. I be lieve that if we follow their lead and start a eomposting projeet along with transitioning to sustain able lighting and energy sourees that we will save tremendous amount of money whieh ean go direetly baek into the green proj eets and ensure sustainability of the green projeets for years to eome. ^ Moishe House Events (Continued from previous page) with leebreakers Thursday, August 18, at 7 PM at Moishe House Join Chai Expeetations and Moishe House for our 1st Tu b'Av holiday eelebration.
