One Book, One Jewish Community A New Center for Jewish Education (CUE) initiative inspires the Community to Come Together A great book fosters eonversations and lays the foundation for a memorable eommunity experienee. Those are the main objeetives driving CJE’s new ini tiative, “One Book, One Jewish Commu nity.” “The idea for the program,” says Debby Bloek, CJE Program Coordinator, “eame from a plaee of wanting to bring the eommunity together around learn ing.” With its myriad eonneetions to Jewish organizations that in- elude sehools and synagogues, CJE is the ideal ineubator for “One Book, One Jewish Commu nity.” Initiating both formal and informal book gatherings refleets CJE’s larger strategy of expanding adult learning. “One Book, One Jewish Community” also repre sents a eoneerted effort to offer learning opportunities that are more eondueive to busy sehed- ules. With “One Book, One Jew ish Community,” people ean read the book in their homes, with their Mary Glickman friends, online, or even listen to the book on the go. The program’s in augural seleetion is Home in the Morning by Mary Gliekman. The novel follows a young Jewish man growing up in the south, as he tries to find his plaee in the Civil Rights Movement while balaneing his Jewish family’s imperative to not stand out in the segregated south. The novel is eertain to inspire deep and animated diseussions about subjeets that taekle blaek- white relationships. Southern Jew ish eulture, and the Civil Rights Movement. CJE will offer online resourees about the book and events leading up to a eulminating program fea turing Mary Gliekman in Char lotte on Sunday, Deeember 3. Debby Bloek antieipates that “One Book, One Jewish Commu nity” will beeome an annual event. “We’re even open to the possibility of pieking more than one book a year in different gen res,” she says. “We’re hoping to inerease our outreaeh through lit erary eonversations and literary events.” Copies of Home in the Morning will be available in the Levine- Skint Judaie Library to borrow and to purehase. ^ CORRECTION On page 8 of the August issue, the Hebrew Cemetery story’s number of Jews in Charlotte in 1867 should have been “more than 50.” CONTENTS Jewish Family Services pp. 20, 21 Federation News ...pp. 1,3 Schools pp. 22-25 Center for Jewish Education P- 2 Community News ..pp. 25, 30-35 Women’s News ... pp. 5, 6 Jewish Community Center. pp. 26, 27 Youth Visions ..pp. 7-10 Dining Out p. 29 Synagogues/Cong pp. 10,15-18 Mazel Tov p. 35 Federation Donor List pp. 11-14 High Holidays pp. 36-39 I would like to make a contribution to demonstrate my support of The Charlotte Jewish News.
