Satur day, August 26 was the last night it was open. “The sale, according to Steve Free man, the manager of the bar, happened within 48 hours and the new owners have plans to make it a straight club.” Freeman also said, “Plans are already in force for a new location central to all parts of Charlotte. The new location may have a different name but all Charades memberships will be honored.” The new club will be between 5(KX) and 9(K)0 square feet, in a new location that will allow, according to Steve, a "totally unique concept, new to Charlotte — but not trendy." The drawing board provides for all ages. "We want to cater to a lot of different age groups," said Steve. "But I really can't elabo rate now until we have chosen the exact location—we are down to five buildings now and have finalized all the legalities." Although the new location may have a different name, all Charades memberships will be honored, so save those membership cards. Also, anyone who had applied for membership at the Eastway location will be eligible to pick up the cards at the new club without a new waiting penod. "We had planned extensive remodeling in about three weeks at the Eastway location, anyway," Steve stated. "When the offer came along, it was an opportune time to take ad vantage of it. The sale of the club happened within 48 hours." Steve also extended thanks to all mem bers and visitors for their continued support. "We're looking forward to seeing all our members and friends in the new facility." Steve has managed Charades for about three and a half years now at the Eastway location. Myrick Backs Out of Meeting With Gay Leaders Charlotte Mayor Sue Myrick, in a letter dated August 18, backed out of a meeting scheduled for August 24 with gay men and lesbians. The letter was written to Don King, the Charlotte activist who had arranged the meet ing. Myrick said: "Several months ago when you asked me to meet with you, you sug gested a private meeting with a few people. When I received your confirmation letter, it stated there would be six groups represented. "Then, this week, I received a question naire to fill out. The questions were not about the concerns of the city. They were asking for my personal views on issues that have noth ing to do with my job as Mayor or with legislative issues of the city. "The original scenario has changed com pletely and I see no benefit to anyone in my attending your meeting next Thursday." King said he was disappointed with Myr- ick's response. "Based on a conversation I had with Mayor Myrick right after she was elected, I thought she was willing to deal with Charlotte's gay/ lesbian population in good faith," he said. "Now I'm not so sure, and of course I'm dis appointed. "But I don't want us to close the door with her yet. I've written her a reply that offers a meeting in which she calls all the shots: the number of people to be present, when and where. That's the only way I know of to keep her from having an excuse not to meet with us. "I really feel she was doing just that - just looking for an excuse to back out of the meet ing. I hope that she will prove that assess ment wrong by scheduling another meeting with us and sticking to it. "Why should she be surprised that the in dividuals she would have met with are people who have assumed responsibilities in the community? Doesn't she meet with influen tial people in other groups? "And why didn't she call me before send ing the cancellation letter. We could have ex plained that every political candidate in this year's local election received a questionnaire from First Tuesday that asks for personal views on issues that concern gay men and lesbians. "Since when do elected officials think that their personal views are not important to their constituents? And since when does the mayor of Charlotte feel that gay and lesbian issues have nothing to do with legislative issues or with the city and its quality of life? "Some will think I'm naive to think that a conservative Republican with fundamental ist Christian ties would meet with us, but I want to give her every possible chance. She has sounded like a good and understanding person in our past conversations." King also arranged meetings with Demo cratic mayoral candidates Craig Madans and incumbent city council member A1 Rousso. Madans, a political newcomer, attended his meeting and has expressed interest in campaigning among gay men and lesbians. Rousso canceled his original date because he had to attend a sudden city function had not rescheduled, though he had expressed a desire to do so. He suffered from pleurisy and pneumonia in July and the loss of time had constricted his campaign schedule. He re cently resigned from the city council and the Democratic race due to ill health. First Itiesday Questions The Candidates By Sandra Bailey Special to Q-Notes First Tuesday, a local advocacy group for the Gay/Lesbian community, sent question naires to the candidates running in the Pri mary for Mayor and City Council. The Pri mary will be held on Sept. 26. A list of the questions and the results obtained by First Tuesday is in this issue of Q-Notes. A committee from First Tuesday has met with Craig Madans and with Sam Carr. We have meetings set up with Evan Webster and Jim Ross. Craig Madans called us to set up his meeting and "welcomes the opportunity to meet again." In response to his three "no" answers, he stated, "I believe that in many instances children would be better off with Continued on page 8 First Tuesday: City Council Questionnaire If elected to the City Council, will you: 1.
