"Each parent can play such an important role in educating society that our children deserve full human and civil rights," said Paulette Goodman, the Washington, D.C., parent-activist who has fought for gay/les bian civil rights since 1983. Goodman brought her message to 29 other parents attending the first-ever conference of PFLAG's South Atlantic region - the Caroli- nas, Georgia and Florida. Regional director Joyce Rankin and her husband Dub, members of the Charlotte PFLAG chapter, hosted the one-day Sept. 16 conference at their home in rural Gaston County, N.C., near Charlotte. Charlotte will host the 1991 national PFLAG convention. Goodman's keynote address outlined present and fumre work of PFLAG's national federation. Other conference topics included strengthening local chapters, countering re ligious homophobia, Goodman's workshop on managing help-line phone calls, and fa cilitating discussion groups. PFLAG National President Paulette Goodman Political activism in Charlotte has pro duced financial dividends for the national federation. Photos and a written account of parents picketing Vice President Dan Quayle's visit to a Christian fundamentalist banquet were used in a summer direct mail appeal, and $5,000 has been raised so far with more mail coming weekly. "Most important is that we managed for the very first time to have a gathering in the region," said national director Rankin. "A very strong sense of unity was developed and we now have a sense of bonding with the national federation because Paulette was here. "Tire growth in the region looks wonder ful," she said. "We have the potential for new chapters in Miami, where one is so very needed, and Myrtle Beach. Boone (N.C.) and Orlando are new. We're targeting Savannah. And we have a contact that seems very prom ising in Puerto Rico." See PFLAG page 6 By Sandra Bailey Special to Q-Notes First Tuesday, a local advocacy group for the gay/lesbian community, has continued to question the candidates running for Mayor and city council. Due to Hugo and the delay of the primary to after press time, we are including information on all the candidates running in tlie primary and the election. A list of the questions and the results obtained by First Tuesday are in this issue of Q-Notes. Craig Madans called to state that now that he is the Democratic candidate for Mayor, he has not changed his position and desire to work for equal rights for gays and lesbians. He said it was ridiculous for the police to spend their time and money to entrap gay men when Charlotte has the drug and crime problem that it has. Charles Salem said, "1 don't believe in laws limiting the sexual activities of consent ing adults. While I have not answered 'yes' to all the questions, I am clearly, unquestiona bly an advocate for gay and lesbian constitu tional and civil rights." Stewart Lillard, when reached by phone, said, "1 feel it best for me to not answer your questions." He did not wish to meet with us. Robert Sheets stated that he would not only support a city ordinance for gay equal rights, but that he would be glad to introduce it. JeffWilliams’brochure states, "With high Judeo-Christian standards and moral values See Candidates page 3 First Tuesday: City Council Questionnaire If elected to the City Council, will you: 1.
