Well, 1990 ended on a positive note, with the QCF Christmas Party (I heard a lot of good comments about it) and started on an equally positive note with the WOW New Year's Eve Party. During Janu ary, the OWLS had two special events — a covered dish dinner and a bnmch and WOW had their monthly Lesbian Night Out. February shows the same promise of busyness, starting with the QCF Valentine's Party, a QCF Singles Brunch and other ac tivities plaimed by OWLS and WOW. Incidentally, if you're wondering who the OWLS are — they're Older, Wiser LesbianS. The Charlotte Chapter was formed last year and they are a self-identified (i.e., no mini mum age requirement) group. They meet regularly on the third Sunday of each month at Liaisons for brunch at 1 pm. They also hold other events during the month, usually at member's houses. Call the Switchboard for more information about OWLS. I read a book recently by Shakti Gawain called "Living In The Light." If her name soimds familiar, she wrote "Creative Visu alization." "Living In The Light" centers around the spirit within each of us. Her belief is that our spirit IS eternal and directs our mind and bcxly through its life journey. (For my spirit, that's no easy task.) Our present life is one of many reincarnations, so our spirit has had some experience in this. She equates the spirit with a higher power (i.e., the God in as) and says that our spirit talks to us through our intuition. Her premise is, if you trust in the spirit, listen to the spirit, you will come to know and attain your life's goals. She suggests medi tations throughout her book because it’s when we take time to be with ourselves, listen to our intuition, when we wipe everything else •5-*5***5*4*^*8***'5*4**fi’*5’+ ^ New LiSe Metropolitan. ^ **" CffliitiiTiimTiiTiitniitty CfaHSrclll « •S. Pastor «{• out of our minds that we can really find peace and guidance. Have you ever meditated and either right then or shortly afterward felt like you had been given the answer to something'.^ (Kind of like Jeopardy ... I'm walking around with an answer here, what's the question'?) Or, one that happens to me is to get an answer to something that's been bugging me, when I'm in the shower. (At that hour, I'm in pretty much of a meditative state. My mind is real blank!) You know, I think of my spirit as con stantly knocking on the door, trying to get through to me. And every so often 1 awake from my oblivion and open the door to see who's there. A little insight rushes in and then I hurry to close the door till the next time I'm vul nerable. You can feel the spirit knocking on your dcxir during the day — it's your intu ition. You've got a gut feeling about some thing, but do you always listen'? Probably not, unless you can back it up with logic. In our mind we can take 10 or 20 minutes to analyze a sihiation and logic it out, but we won't take that same amount of time to meditate and learn what our inner spirit is trying to say. Did you ever have an idea or thought pop into your head and you said, "That's just pure inspiration." Well, if was. The spirit in you managed to tell you what you needed to know. So all this is pointing out that you really do have the answers inside. If you sit quietly, you will hear them. To carry out our work in the way that our .spirit intended, retiuires that we not only listen, but be willing to give up control. We have to let go of our expectations (not our hopes and dreams) and allow the spirit to direct us. Our Western culture is very much into contnd and rationalization, .so letting go and listening to a little voice inside is very difficult. But it makes sease to triLsf the spirit, the higher power within us. And when you can do it, there's a wonderful feeling of calmness and peace and trust that no matter what happens, it will all lie okay. Something else that Shakti Gawain talks about in her Ixxrk is the relation of our spirit to the universe. She ptrses what 1 think is a beautiful thought — the energy of the uni verse passes through us to other people: in turn, other people give us energy which passes through us on its way back to the universe — she's saying that we're all con nected spiritually and we’re constantly re ceiving and giving energy amongst the people who enter our life. Lsn't that another reason to listen to oiir intuition'? To allow the .spiritual energy of the universe to reach our arnsciousness where we can act on it to guide our life's journey. As 1 write this on January 17tli, I'm not sure what will be happening with the F*ersian Gulf War by the time you read this. One thing for certain, our brothers and sisters who are in that area, regardless of where they were bom and raised, need our prayers and positive loving energy. One last thing — as I’ve said in years past, February 14th i.sn't jast for lovers. It's a time to tell those closest to you that you love them and you're glad they're in your life! See you .soon.
