Metrolina Gay Married Men
Forming Charlotte Chapter
Are you a gay male married to a woman
and have no one to discuss related problems
with? Help may be on the way.
A support group of gay married men is
now in a formative stage for the Charlotte/
Metrolina area. Plans now are to have an
organizational meeting on Tuesday evening,
April 16th, to see if there is enough interest to
form a group.
The support group is open to married men
and will discuss various issues of being both
gay and married to a woman. Metrolina Gay
Married Men is being initiated by two local
men who have a need for a discreet forum of
exchange and support.
"Men in our situations have particular
problems not regularly addressed in local
support groups. We definitely do not see
MGMM as an alternative to professional
counseling for those who need it. We want
only to develop a supportive circle of friends
who can understand, through their own ex
periences, the problems of fellow members.
"Face it, these are not the sort of issues
you can casually chat about at the Rotary
Club or with all the parents of the kids' soccer
team."
Closeted men as well as those who are
open to their wives are welcome. Sensitive to
the concerns of confidentiality and discre
tion, only first names are needed.
If you are interested in attending the or
ganizational meeting, call the Switchboard
(704) 525-6128 and leave your name and
number to be reached at a later time. If
telephoning is not possible, write to
Boxholder, P.O. Box 19524, Charlotte, NC
28219.

First Tuesday Publishes ’Outing* Position
By John Owens
Special to Q-Notes
At the February general meeting of FIRST
TUESDAY Association for Gay and Les
bian Equality, the subject was "outing," and
with over 60 people in attendance, the infor
mation and opinions exchanged were as di
verse as the people in attendance. As a result
of that meeting, the Board of Directors has
released the following statement, which was
approved by the membership at the March
general meeting:
First Tuesday Association for Gay
andLesbian Equality encourages pride
and empowerment through visibility.
Honesty about who we are is essential
in creating a healthy environment for
all individuals. First Tuesday ac
knowledges the personal nature of this
decision and the various levels at which
each person experiences this process.
While First Tuesday realizes the
detrimental effects of homophobia
within our community, as an organi
zation, we choose not to use the tactic
of outing. We look forward to the day
when honesty about one's sexual ori
entation is the norm rather than the
exception.
The Board of Directors would like to
thank all those who participated in the open
forum for enabling them to make a decision
that they feel is in the best interest of the
organization.
