sc pride celebration set for April
COLUMBIA—April 15-17, 1994, will
bring the 5th annual South Carolina Gay and
Lesbian Pride March, Rally, Celebration and
related events to Columbia. A plethora of
exciting events will fill the weekend. Plans
are well underway for affiliated events rang
ing fi'om a Welcome Center at the Commu
nity Center to films, parties, a Mr. Pride
Pageant and church services.
Pride day itself (Saturday, April 16) will
see marchers gather by noon on Calhoun St.
at Main St. The March will begin at 1 p.m.
and proceed en masse to the State House for
the rally. Entry in the march is free for floats,
convertibles, entertainers andmusicians, but
space is limited. Contact GLPM as soon as
possible to be included.
An exciting rally is shaping up for the
State House steps. Mandy Carter will be
back from Washington, DC to emcee. Mel
White, a pastor at Cathedral of Hope Metro
politan Community Church in Dallas, the
world's largest M.C.C., will be the featured
speaker. White was previously an evangel
ical Christian minister and writer. He was a
ghost writer for Oliver North and Jerry Fal well
and was acolleague of Billy Graham's...until
he came out as a gay man. White has been
featured on such shows as Larry King Live
and will soon have a book released about his
experiences. He is a speaker in great de
mand, and GLPM feels very lucky to have
him speaking at the SC rally.
Following the rally, the Annual Pride
Celebration will take place only a few blocks
away at The Edge, 1801 Main St. in Jefferson
Square. The celebration will feature local
and regional entertainment, vendors and in
formation booths. Contact GLPM if your
business or organization wants to take part.
Details for Pride weekend are being com
pleted now. Pride is April 15-17 this year,
two months earlier than normal to avoid
conflict with the Gay Games and Stonewall
25 in New York City in June.
For all the Pride details, contact GLPM at
P.O. Box 12648, Columbia, S.C. 29211, or

“Don't Go Breaking My
Heart” Elton John/
RuPaul-MCA (135
bpm)
Elton John and RuPaul have teamed to
update the classic Elton John/Kiki Dee hit.
And Giorgio Moroder brings us a very 90s
mix with production on the high energy tip.
Although Elton John, RuPaul and Giorgio
Moroder are all fabulous artists, the record is
really quite cheesy. In other words, it should
do very well in the gay clubs. It's also very
poppy. Which means that we could be over
this by Valentine's Day if it is put into heavy
rotation. Actually, the best part of this song
is the video. It's hilarious, a definite must
see.
“Stay” Eternal - EMI
(102 bpm)
Eternal is like a British SWV and their
domestic R&B track, “Stay,” has been avail
able as an import for months. Take my
advice, find the import, pay the extra three or
four dollars and enjoy. If you buy the domes
tic version, prepare for disappointment.
Teddy Riley remixed the cuts on the domes
tic release. Do I need to continue? All the
strings, pianos, and sassy percussion has
been stripped oway and replaced with that
same old Teddy Riley Hip Hop production.
What started out as a lovely record is now just
pointless. EMI certainly went out of their
way to make sure America wasn’t served
with any flavor.
