the bar.”
But, after Fernandez was arrested and
charged with assault with intent to kill, he told
the Jacksonville police a very different story.
He said he and Leonard were having sex
when Leonard placed the amyl nitrite bottle
under his nose. Fernandez claimed that the
amyl nitrite caused him to lose control of his
body, and he stabbed Leonard in a wild frenzy.
But he denied stealing the money bag. Evi
dently, police believed Fernandez because
they had not charged him with armed robbery
as Q-Notes was going to press. Leonard stated,
“[The police] told me they questioned him
about [the money bag], and he said he didn’t
know anything about it, and they believed
him because he was so up-front with them.”
The police detective investigating the case
declined to answer any of the questions posed
by Q-Notes, stating, “I can’t talk about that.”
Leonard vehemently rebutted Fernandez’
story. “We hadn’t even started anything, num
ber one, and number two, poppers are not
going to make you do that.”
As a result of the facial wounds, Leonard
said he is paralyzed below his left eye and
numb in his left cheek. Doctors are unsure if
he will regain the feeling in these areas.
