Brightman Continued from page 21 of interesting things were tried (with varying degrees of success): in one number, she wore a black leotard and a hoop skirt frame covered with black lace. Her dancing boys wrapped the hoop with a violet satin skirt during the black out, so that... .presto! She’s wearing a new out fit. Well, except that she’s not. There was also this great number where she sang from atop a tall staircase, tightly wrapped in about a mile of fabric, looking for all the world like Gloria Swanson. Perfect, until the dancing boys rolled the staircase offstage with Sarah atop it, hang ing on for dear life. Naturally, I have to mention Titanic. Sarah has recorded “II Mio Cuore Va,” which is “My Heart Will Go On” in Italian. And it is actu ally the best version of that song I have yet heard. And of course, she sang it in concert, walking back and forth on a catwalk that was made up to look like the bow of a ship. As it was lowered to the stage for her to climb aboard, however, it jerked and fell briefly, and appeared to cause Sarah to think twice before getting on. But, trooper that she is, she did, and even did that whole Kate Winslet “I’m flying” thing. Other than the opening, there were two other vastly memorable moments. The first number after intermission was “Captain Nemo,” one of the best songs from her little- known CD Dive. I saw her in 1995, in her first tour since that recording, and she did not sing from it, so I was pretty sure that she was hop ing we’d all forgotten it (it was fabulous in its own way, but only sold about 12 copies). I was wrong, however, and she worked “Captain Nemo” into this huge spectacle that involved her and some dancing boys flying about stage on wires. There was also a big finale that in volved two songs from Phantom of the Opera, a somewhat surprising choice of “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” as a first encore, and her latest big hit, “Time to Say Goodbye” as her final number. All in all, a most satisfying evening. Campy, touching, and all-over fabulous. T Hollywood Compiled by Dan Van Mourik Q-Notes Staff A new group has formed in Hendersonville, NC.
