Treyf (“unkosher” in Yiddish) is an unor
thodox documentary about two Jewish lesbi
ans who met and fell in love at a Passover Seder.
With compelling visuals and moving narratives,
filmmakers Alisa Lebow and Cynthia Madansky
create their own brand of progressive Jewish
identity from a lesbian perspective. The result
is an entertaining and witty film about the joys
and paradoxes of Jewish lesbian life. Viewer’s
guide: Mature themes and language.

SambalBelacan in San Francisco (US, NR,
1997, 25 min, I6mm)
Fragrant chili and shrimp paste, “sambal
belacan,” is a staple in Singaporean cooking.
Representing the cultural mingling of many
ethnic groups, it serves as a metaphor for the
experiences of expatriate Singaporean lesbians
living in San Francisco. In intimate interviews,
three women who emigrated to live openly
share their feelings of exclusion from both their
families, culture of origin and the US. Poetic
sequences examine the challenges of immigra
tion, discrimination and homophobia, plus the
rewards of self-determination. This rich film
raises provocative questions about the nature
of home and belonging, and speaks compel-

which will be contested.
Along with the Philadelphia and San Fran
cisco protests; over 100 people attended a Provi
dence, RI prayer vigil and rally against the death
penalty and in support of Abu-Jamal held in
conjunction with the national General Synod
of the United Church of Christ. Two weeks
earlier, 23 activists were arrested in Paris after
storming the American Library demanding a
new trial and health care for Abu-Jamal.
In recent weeks, he has developed pain,
swelling and discoloration in both of his feet,
but has not been examined by an independent
physician.
Last October, Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court
denied Abu-Jamal’s bid for a new trial, uphold
ing the ruling of Judge Albert Sabo, the origi
nal trial judge. Abu-Jamal, an author and ac
tivist, was convicted in 1982 of fatally shoot
ing a Philadelphia police officer. Critics say the
trial was tainted by the bias of Judge Sabo, the
deliberate exclusion of 11 black potential ju
rors and the assignment of a court-appointed
lawyer who, by his own admission, was inex
perienced in criminal law. In addition, witnesses
came forward during the 1995 Post-Convic
tion Relief Appeal hearings claiming they were
coerced to lie, suppress or change their earlier
accounts of the December 9, 1981 incident by
the police.

With parties still selecting, the number of con
firmed out gay and lesbian Candidates so far
stands at 11. Carterton’s transsexual mayor,
Georgina Beyer, brings the number of self-ac
knowledged ‘family’ to 12. Nommations remain
open until about a month before the election,
whose date has yet to be announced.
Spy fired
OTTAWA, CANADA—An intelligence of
ficer has been fired from the Canadian Secu
rity Intelligence Service (CSIS) after her lesbian
lover revealed classified details to the media
about what she claimed was the spy agency’s
role in harboring an alleged Middle-East ter
rorist. Chantal-Annick Tremblay, 34, a 10-year
veteran CSIS officer based in Quebec City, was
fired after an internal investigation concluded
that she could not be trusted to handle secret
lingly for a community whose voices are sel
dom heard. Madeleine Lim is the producer,
director, writer, cinematographer and editor of
this short film. Viewer’s Guide: Mature themes.

Everything could have been so easy for
Joaquin, a handsome well-to-do teenager and
the only son of a wealthy family, but even at an
early age he knew that he was “different” from
other boys. Based on the best-selling novel by
talk-show host Jaime Bayly, Don’t Tell Anyone is
an insider’s tale of sexual hypocrisy and ho
mophobia in Lima’s upper class. Joaquin
struggles with his natural instincts and the pres
sure from his family and society to fit into the
accepted path of life. Directed by Francisco J.

Lesbian activist Dawn Reel, another arrestee
from the Simon Nkoli group and a member of
New York’s Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition,
said that the July 3 actions are only the begin
ning of a campaign of civil disobedience for a
new trial. “At this point,” she said, “despite all
efforts by the legal team, the system has denied
Mumia his due-process rights. That’s why we
have to take this matter to the streets for the
Court of the People to judge.”
Interest in the case has been growing in
GLBT communities nationally. This past April,
hundreds joined “Rainbow Flags for Mumia”
contingents of two rrfassive pro-Mumia marches
in Philadelphia and San Francisco. Last month,
large contingents supporting Abu-Jamal
marched in GLBT pride parades in New York
and San Francisco. Among the prominent en
dorsees of the July 3 civil disobedience action
was bisexual musician Ani DiFranco and New
York lesbian activist Leslie Cagan, co-chair of
the 1987 March on Washington. Other endors
ers included South African poet laureate and
former anti-apartheid political prisoner Den
nis Brutus, African-American educator and
writer Manning Marable, Puerto Rican inde
pendence leader Rafael Cancel Miranda, anti
war activist' David Dellinger and Rev. Lucius
Walker, director of Pastors for Peace (who was
one of those arrested.)

ner, Mona Naess, from talking to the media.
Naess had gone to the media after learning that
CSIS planned to transfer Tremblay to Montreal.
Tremblay had already filed a complaint to the
Canadian Human Right Commission, saying
the transfer amounted to discrimination be
cause of her sexual orientation. Tremblay ac
cused CSIS of taking revenge over the human
rights complaint.
Gay rugby
LONDON, ENGLAND—A male gay and
bisexual rugby team has been granted full mem
bership by the English Rugby Football Union
(RFU) and has become the world’s first to win
league status. A spokesman for the RFU was
quoted as saying the Kings Cross Steelers team
had fulfilled all requirements for membership.
“The only rule we have referring to sexuality is
that ours is a men’s game. There is a separate
governing body for women’s rugby,” the spokes
man said. T
