Chloe Sevigny as Lana Tisdale (left) and Hilary Swank as Brandon Teena
Film is a good cry for Brandon
by David Stout
Q-Notes Staff
Boys Don’t Cry, Kimberly Peirce’s blistering
motion picture detailing the final months of
murder victim Brandon Teena’s tragic life,
comes to home video and DVD on the 18th of
this month.
Teena, who was raped and later shot to death
by two violence-prone acquaintances when they
discovered he was transgendered, is portrayed
by Hilary Swank. Swank delivers a goosebump-
inducing performance that garnered critical ac
colades and Best Actress awards from coast to
coast.
Swank suffuses Brandon with such sweet joy
— as he passes for a man among a small circle
of friends in Falls City, Nebraska — that his
brutal end is all the more gutwrenching when
it comes.
Chloe Sevigny is also spectacular as Lana
Tisdale, the dead-end, factory worker who falls
for Brandon despite his genderbending (or
maybe even because of it...one of the film’s
strengths is that you’re never really quite sure).
Lana’s acceptance gives Brandon the courage
to consider leaving the Nebraska wasteland to
gether. It’s a dream they never realize.
Although the film was criticized in some
circles for its factual liberties, the artistic license
that Peirce takes with Boys Don’t Cry feels nei
ther dishonest nor contrived. Brandon is pre
sented as a flawed, complex man (an arrest for
check forgery ultimately leads to the tevelation
of his birth identity) and his fate is all the more
unsettling for it.
Boys Don’t Cry should be mandatory view
ing for all hate crime offenders. It rips away the
curtain that separates victims from their hu
manity and forces audiences to confront the
naked horror of these crimes. T
