Q CULTURe Q-NOTES • FEBRUARY 2 OutCharlotte 2000 film series continues February 27 A transgender championship volleyball team and the enduring friendship of a group of black gay men living in Hollywood are the plots of the February venue of films coming your way through the 2002 Charlotte Gay & Lesbian Film Series. • Series runs through April; • Screenings on Wednesday; • February films screen at Carolina Pavilion 22 The schedule for the 2002 Charlotte Gay 6 Lesbian Film Series continues with: February 27 Films: 7 pm The Iron Ladies This film tells the true story of a Thai male volleyball team that competes in the national championships in 1996 with a team consisting mostly of gays, transvestites and transsexuals. They head for the national championships,-only to face the taunts of the other players and tournament officials. They fight back with dignity and honor to emerge as true champions and demonstrate to their opponents and to the nation what true sportsmanship and respect for oneself is all about. Underwritten by Paper Skyscraper. 9 pm Punks The sound track alone makes this accomplished, well-crafted debut worth a look-see in its North Carolina premiere. This is an all too rare film about the lives and loves, ups and downs, and en during friendships of a group of predominantly African-American gay men in LA. Without coming off like a remedial primer on black queer life or devolving into overweening sentiment or cliche, it captures the authentic flavor of black gay urban life with refreshingly subtle, precise attention to detail.
