MYGR ACS reaching out to Lotino/Lotino community AIDS Care Service. Inc. (ASC) of Winston Salem is set to extend services into its growing Latino Community. As the Latino population has expanded, so has the realization that medical and social services needed to become more accessible to those community members. To offset cultural factors that seem to contribute to the increase ia HIV among the Latino community; ACS. in partnership with Forsyth Medical Center, will hire a Spanish speaking outreach Case Manager who will foster contact with local HIV+ Latino people and their families. The Duke Endowment has allocated a grant of $42,000 to fund this Spanish-language outreach project in 2002 and is considering a further commitment of $50,000 in the second and third years. Guilford County’s leading AIDS service organizations, has launched a new counseling and therapy program to help meet the emotional and mental health needs of its clients. Fran Pearson, provisionally licensed clinical social worker, has been named head of the program. "Triad Health Project has always prided itself on its commitment to providing new services to meet the ever- changing needs of our clients." said Sam Parker, executive director. “A large number of HIV + people have found that their diagnosis casues them to feel fearful, isolated, angry, stressed, anxious or sad. In response to this need, we’re pleased to announce the new prograrri." Longtime folk-favorites Ada Khoury and Amy Piefee return to the Triangle. Khoury. singer-songwriter hailing from Asheville will appear at Car’s Six String Cafe on Saturday. March 30. for an 8 pm show, opening with Amy Pierce. Ada is well-known to long-time Triangle residents who enjoyed her folky performances at the old Columbia Street Bakery back in the 80s when she was a resident physician in psychiatry at UNC Hospitals. A master guitarist and experienced songwriter. Ada wowed audiences and developed a loyal following through regular performances around the Triangle. After moving to the NC mountains, she took a Triangle-hiatus. Pierce has also taken a sabbatical from the local stage, but is excited to be back onstage. She. too. is an excellent guitarist and a "sculptor of lyrics which weave wonderful tales or reveal her ‘take’ on all that surrounds her.” Expect a fine evening of music in the unique listening room and smoke-free enviroment at the Six String Cafe in MacGregor Village off US I and NC 64 near Regency Park in Cary. Triangle Helpline seeks Assistant Directors and Volunteers Assistant Directors work with the Helpline Director managing all aspects of Helpline operation: vounteer training and coordination: community outreach, networking and advertising; office management; fundraising: resource guide management. Though you do not have to be a current Helpline volunteer, you need to attend thenext phone volunteer training. Helpline serves Triangle LGBT communities, providing peer counseling, education, information, resource referrals and documentation of bias crimes over the phone. Helpline is staffed Sunday through Thursday from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Volunteers are asked to work one shift a month, so the commitment is not large.
