With this passage and the governor’s signa ture, New Mexico will become the first state in the nation to enact two stand-alone pieces of legislation covering transgenders. Representatives of New Mexico Gender Advocacy Information Network, a transgen- der advocacy organization, had lobbied the state legislature for over four years to see the protective legislation pass. "This victory is a triumph for all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in our state, and will contribute greatly toward safe ty and protection for us all,” said Virginia Stephenson, executive director of NMGAIN, immediately after the bill’s passage. Stephenson called the effort “a.testament to many allies working together to see legislation pass. We earnestly thank the Coalition for Equality in New Mexico for working to see this inclusive Bill become law.” “It’s taken us 12 years to get to this spot,” gushed an obviously pleased Linda Siegel, a lobbyist for CENM. For the first time the Coalition had three paid lobbyists during the session: Siegel, transgender lobbyist Stephenson, and Gloria Nieto. This luxury allowed the group to visit every legislator and attend every committee meeting, and was considered the largest contributing factor to the victory. ST. LOUIS, MO — Gateway Pageantry and Bob Hollenbeck Productions have announced the location and dates for the first ever Miss Qtieen of Qiioens National Pageant. In order to learn more about special needs and concerns of aging GLBTs, Dr. Sara Brallier at Coastal Carolina University is conducting a study of the experiences of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender individuals over the age of 50. She is interested in stories about aging, interactions with medical and service providers, special problems of estate planning and relations with lovers and families. The spectacular production’s preliminar ies and final night competition will take place at the expansive, 2200-seat Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville, IL, just minutes from downtown St. Louis, MO. Scheduled to take place July 30 - August 2, the Pageant will feature former national title holders and first alternates from all over the United States as well as special appear ances by many of the country’s reigning title holders and will be video taped for later resale. The event is open to all former national female impersonation title holders and first alternates. CJualified applicants compete for the title. Miss Queen of Queens, with over $35,000 in cash and prizes. Every aspect of this competition is geared to providing a level playing field for all competitors from all national systems.
