The nation’s largest association of psy chologists — which lists a membership of 150,000 — also expressed opposition to discrimination against lesbian and gay parents. As well, APA found same-sex and het erosexual couples remarkably similar, and parenting effectiveness and children’s psy chological well-being unrelated to parental sexual orientation. The positions, drawn up by the APA Working Group on Same-Sex Families and Relationships, are meant to guide psychol ogists in the public debate over civil mar riage for same-sex couples. “In the context of the huge social and political debate that is currently going on, APA and psychologists had to grapple with the issue of what psychology believes is in the public interest in this controversy,” said Armand R. Cerbone, a Chicago psycholo gist who chaired the working group. r..* i Servlti|4thc Comttiuiuty since at Metrollna AU)S Project and now serving the Community In private pi-actlce. Psychological Association Arniand R. Cerbone on years of research, the group has found that the well-being of a child is unrelated to sexual orientation. In fact, the difference between parents like myself and my part ner and opposite-sex parents is that we don’t have the rights and protections of marriage while others do. This statement makes clear that there’s no sound reason for any disparity.” “Utilizing sound information and research, the APA continues to support full equality for our families,” said Aimee Gelnaw, executive director of the Family Pride Coalition, the only national non-prof it organization dedicated to securing equal ity for LGBT parents and their families. “The [APA] share[s] our understanding that fam ilies are best served when they have access to all the protections that come with mar riage, and that children are best served when raised in stable and loving families. Our families are helped, and no one else is harmed, when we are treated equally.” But not all political organizations who responded to the APA’s announcement saw the statement as a positive one. The ultra-conservative Liberty Counsel — an anti-gay, right-wing think tank of sorts — was quick to pounce on the APA. Mathew D. Staver, President and General Counsel of Liberty Counsel, stated: “The American Psychological Association has shed its professional charter to become a political machine. Thousands of studies have reached the obvious conclusion — that children fare best in every measurable category when raised by a mom and a dad; Gender does matter to children. The APA’s position on homosexuality flies in the face of common sense, ignores the social sci ence research, and will hurt children.” dventures RIDE YOUR DREAMS!
