Feb. 9, four couples, accom panied by almost 30 friends and supporters, attempted to register for marriage licenses at the Richland County Judicial Center. The couples then went to the capitol to talk to legisla tors. The event was covered live at noon on WIS-TV in Columbia, as well as on evening news on WIS and other local stations. Postcards on mar riage equality were dis tributed to legislators with four messages — good for business, good for taxpayers, reli gious questions, and demographic infor mation. (If you would like copies of the postcards, email SCPrideCenter@aol.com.) On Feb. 12, Freedom to Marry Day, GLPM and the Community Center hosted a “lunch and learn” on marriage, which included the screening of a video of a national debate on gay marriage between representatives of Focus on the Family and Freedom to Marry. The forum pulled together both supporters and opponents. GLPM’s work on marriage was the cover story in The Free Times, which fea tured an interview with national director of Freedom to Marry, Evan Wolfson, who will be the keynote speaker at GLPM’s banquet on Apr. 15. Also included were pictures of last year’s events, along with a point/counterpoint of columns from Ed Madden, president of SCGLPM, and Oran Smith, director of the Palmetto Family Council, the S.C. affiliate of Focus on the Family. The articles are available on the Free Times website (www.free-times.com). For an electronic copy of any of the arti cles, email SCPrideCenter@aol.com.
