CSRARA hosts 'Healing Internalized
Homophobia' workshop
AIKEN/AUGUSTA —On Mar. 12 from
1-4 p.m., the CSRA Rainbow Alliance and
Georgia Equality will host a workshop on
“Healing Internalized Homophobia” at the
Church of Our Redeemer, 557 Greene St.,
Augusta, Ga. Created by peorgia Equality,

is a three-hour
interactive
workshop that
gives partici
pants the op
portunity to
examine their
core beliefs surrounding self-acceptance
and recognize, in the words of one recent
participant, “how I am controlled by my
own homophobia.” It focuses on the
dynamics of homophobia and heterosex
ism and how these can affect our own
sense of identity and worth. Group discus
sion, a 20-minute movie and facilitated
exercises by trained volunteers of Georgia

Equality’s Education Department help
workshop participants become more
aware of internalized homophobia, and
learn how to access their own courage and
assert their own individual personal power.
Participants are also given tools that they
can use to heal the wounds gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgender people have
buried deep within. There is no cost to
attend, but donations will be accepted to
help cover the traveb costs of the work

Piccolo Fiction Open in Charieston
CHARLESTON — Apr. 15 is the deadline
for the Piccolo Fiction Open, a literary com
ponent of the Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival in
Charleston, S.C., which is looking for your
best short-short story, your craftiest para
graph, your most concise daydream.
This year the theme is “Right.” The
theme can be interpreted anyway you like
(right versus left, righteousness, human
rights) and can figure as minimally or as
dominantly as you prefer. The word limit is
500. Submit four copies of your original,
unpublished work by Apr. 15. Include one
separate cover page with your contact
information and title of the work, a $5 sub
mission fee (made out to the city, as fol
lows) and a self-addressed, stamped enve
lope. At the top of your work, include the

changes name
MYRTLE BEACH —The gay and lesbian
student organization at Coastal Carolina
University has changed its name to PRIDE
(People Respecting Individual Diversity and
Equality). The website for the organization

COLUMBIA —The USC Bisexual, Gay,
Lesbian, and Straight Alliance (BGLSA)
was recently granted office space in the
West Wing of the Russell House
University Union. One of only five groups
to receive this honor, including Fraternity
and Sorority Councils, the Association of
African-American Students (one of the
largest student groups on campus) and
Dance Marathon (USC’s largest student-
run philanthropy), this office space will
serve as a center for organizing efforts as
well as expanded programming in
upcoming years. This marks the first time
that any group like BGLSA has been
granted a form of institutional approval
outside of Student Governrrient in several
years.
Names Project AIDS Quilt showing
MYRTLE BEACH — The Coastal AIDS
Quilt Project, a nonprofit group whose sole
function is to help fund showings of the
AIDS quilt in this area, is partnering with

Coastal Carolina University to bring 360
panels of the quilt back to Horry County
April 1 -3. Each quilt panel is three feet by
six feet, intentionally created to be the size
of a grave. Most are created with names on
them in memory of an individual. The pan
els are sent to a foundation in Atlanta,
where they are catalogued and stored.
Because of the restrictions on size and
materials, to ensure endurance of the pan
els, free workshops will be held for anyone
who would like help creating a panel for
the April showing. For more information,
