FEBRUARY 26 . 2005 • Q-NOTES Politics 17 Penguins out of peril jrom page 1 Kueck also indicated that the motivation behind the “sexual reprogramming” effort was because the penguins, which are native to South America, are an endangered species. She added that she was “skeptical” the program would be successful. Kueck’s sketicism was well-founded, as the six gay penguins were not interested in the newly introduced females, remaining faithful to their same-sex partners. The gay males were separated from their mates and, one by one, the females were introduced. The males pined for their mates until they were reunited. “The relationships were apparently too strong,” said Kueck. Although Kueck said that another attempt will be made in the spring of 2006, gay protestors have apparently stymied that idea. Following the outcry she said she was abandoning the proposal. “Everyone can live as they please,” she added. Gay penguins are not unusual. New York’s Central Park Zoo, has Roy and Silo, who were together for several years. As with one of the couples in Germany, the two put a rock simulating an egg in their nest and sat on it, keeping it warm in the folds of their abdomens. Gay penguins have also been found in Japan. Scientists at Rikkyo University in Tokyo, found about 20 same-sex pairs at 16 major aquariums and zoos across the country. HRC denounces lifetime appointment for William Pryor to the U.S. Court of Appeals Pryor has shown consistent bias against the LGBT community by Mark Shields WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has taken aim at ultra-conservative William Pryor, strongly urging the Senate not to confirm his nom ination for a lifetime appointment to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Time and again in his career, he has gone out of his way to oppose equal rights for the LGBT community. Pryor is one of only six judges out of roughly 200 nomi nated by President George W. Bush that HRC has opposed. “William Pryor’s record is so clearly a threat to individual rights and protections, that all Americans should be concerned,” said HRC Vice President of Policy David Smith. He has made it clear throughout his career that he has a strong bias against LGBT Americans. This country needs judges who make fair and balanced deci sions free from any slanted ideology.” Pryor received a recess appointment to the Eleventh Circuit Court on Feb. 20, 2004. This temporary appointment expires at the end of 2005. If he is to continue his appointment, the Senate will need to con firm his nomination. Some of the more troubling issues on Judge Pryor’s record include: • Casting the deciding vote to uphold Florida’s discriminatory adoption ban. Florida is the only state in the country that explicitly bans children from being adopted by their gay parents. • As Attorney General of Alabama, he was the only attorney general outside of Texas to author an amicus brief in the Supreme Court defending Texas’s anti gay sodomy statute, and in particular a state’s interest in singling out same-sex relations for punishment, even though his own state’s statute made no distinction between same- and opposite-sex relations. That same brief also compared same-sex relationships to pedophilia, bestiality and necrophilia. o Pryor does not respect the separation of church and state. He used his Alabama Attorney General website to post speeches promoting his own religious views that had no relationship to the state’s interests. He also provided links to William Pryor anti-gay organizations and other con servative groups but not to groups with a neutral or different viewpoint. More than 175 groups joined in oppos ing William Pryor’s nomination including the Log Cabin Republicans, the NAACP, NARAL Pro-Choice America, People for the American Way, the Sierra Club and World Association of Persons With Disabilities. info: www.independent|udiciary.com Joseph G.
